Here’s What Awkwafina Had to Say About Those ‘Little Mermaid’ Rumors

It appears Awkwafina might become a part of Disney’s world as the newest cast member of the live-action The Little Mermaid remake.

Over the weekend, the 30-year-old actress attended the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, where she cryptically addressed rumors about her potential involvement in the upcoming movie.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Awkwafina revealed that while she can’t give away any spoilers, things are looking up for The Little Mermaid remake. “Aww man, that all isn’t confirmed yet, but obviously if it happens, I would be more than honored,” she said.

The Crazy Rich Asians star went on to say that she fully supports the film and its star, Halle Bailey. “It’s a classic, yeah. I’m very, very happy,” she added. “That’s my princess right there, so I’m very happy with what they have [announced] so far.”

Back in July, rumors started circulating about Awkwafina and The Little Mermaid. The reports claimed that she was cast in the live-action remake as Scuttle, a talking seagull from the animated film. (The character was originally voiced by Buddy Hackett.) Other rumored castings include Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Javier Bardem (King Triton) and Melissa McCarthy (Ursula).

The Little Mermaid remake will be directed by Rob Marshall, with David Magee penning the script. The new version will feature original songs from the 1989 animated hit, as well as new tunes from composer Alan Menken (with some assistance from Lin-Manuel Miranda, NBD). Production is set to begin in early 2020.

Take that, Harry Styles.
