It's no secret gourmand scents are making a comeback. After years of being shunned for being kiddie or cloyingly sweet, bakery-esque fragrances are finding new appeal—and not just among the smellmaxxing teen demo. Searches for gourmand and vanilla perfumes have climbed 400 percent over the past few years, according to buzz tracker Exploding Topics, along with rising interest in fragrances that can make you smell like smoky cherries (hi, Tom Ford) or pistachio (what's up, Kayali?).

Fragrance company Snif has experienced this firsthand, with its Half-Baked Pumpkin Smash candle and Crumb Couture fragrance selling out in less than 24 hours of their launch. Crumb Couture, a riff on croissant scents, has been so popular that they've since introduced it as a candle and laundry detergent.

But does its latest launch, designed to remind you of a short stack of flapjacks with all the toppings, go too far?

Would the Pancake Collection, as it's known, be delightfully cheeky—or make you feel like you spent one too many hours at your local IHOP?

After testing the line firsthand, I'm pleased to report it's the former—and that the scents aren't syrupy; they're surprisingly complex and elevated. Best of all, they're designed to be layered, so you can customize it to create a scent that feels personal to you. Here's exactly what to expect from the collection, so you can decide if it's right for you.

What Is the Snif Pancake Collection?

Simply put, the Pancake Collection consists of one fine fragrance—Hot Cakes—and three body mists (Hazel Split, Berry Styles and Extra Whip). What makes this innovative is that it touches on two trends at once—gourmand fragrances but also the desire to create your own signature scent. In this case, the body mists have a lighter concentration, so they can be used as "toppings," paired with Hot Cakes to make the fragrance your own.

But, this being Snif, the scents aren't an exact match for each part of the pancakes—and that's a good thing. Let me break them down:

1. Hot Cakes

snif

  • Scent Notes: maple syrup, butter, sugared musk, berry compote, buttermilk, pancake accord

Hot Cakes lives up to its name—the griddled, carb-y scent of fresh pancakes comes through immediately, with a light syrup and berry finish. There's a muskiness to it that prevents it from being too sweet, creating this immediate sense that you just sat down to brunch at the Plaza; not that you've accidentally gotten Mrs. Butterworth's on your sweater.

One spritz isn't overpowering, yet it lingers throughout the day, so you don't need to reapply. And arguably, the coolest feature? The lid is magnetized, satisfyingly clicking into place.

  • Scent Notes: blueberry, raspberry, lime, blue freesia, vanilla, creamy woods

I worried this scent would remind me of dousing myself in Bath & Body Works sprays—or whatever glittery, berry-scented potions I'd snagged from Claire's—back in my middle school days. Instead of skewing mall-rat berry, the vibe is much more fresh-picked blueberries. There's a hint of raspberry and lime too, creating a tartness that prevents this mist from being one-note.

3. Extra Whip

snif

  • Scent Notes: whipped cream, milky sandalwood, vanilla, cold aldehydes, fluffy musk, icing sugar

If you prefer scents on the fresher end of the spectrum, this is the body mist for you. With a name like Extra Whip, you expect it to be pure sugar. Snif's interpretation leans more into amber and musk notes, creating more of a warm, clean scent. (That may be due to the cold aldehydes in the mix, a fresh scent that people often associate with laundry or soap.) It was my favorite of the body mists, as it helped temper the others.

4. Hazel Split

snif

  • Scent Notes: cocoa, hazelnut spread, creamy banana, coconut, amberwood, musk

Nutella fans, this one's for you. You get the fresh, ripe banana right away, but it soon gives way to a slightly nutty, cocoa scent. It's decadent and nostalgic, all in one spritz.

The Bottom Line: Should You Try It?

What I Like

  • Gorgeous packaging
  • Long-lasting (but not overpowering) scents
  • Can layer fragrances

What I Don't Like

  • Body mist caps can be tricky to pop on/off

snif

Honestly, this scent series is a lot of fun to mix and match, depending on your mood. I was surprised at how Hot Cakes lasted throughout an hour-long workout, and soon realized I'm a Hot Cakes with a light spritz of Extra Whip girlie. (Though, if I'm feeling extra, I'll layer on Hazel Split for good measure.)

The Hot Cakes + Toppings Layering Bundle is a fun way to experiment with the line, and it makes for a fun (conversation-sparking) gift. So long, Tomato Girl—can 2025 be Brunch Girl Summer?
