I Have Some Thoughts About TikTok's Controversial 'Morning Shed' Trend

Plus, experts weigh in

I remember thinking that the ‘everything shower trend’ was excessive, but nothing prepared me for TikTok’s latest ritual: the ‘morning shed.’ It follows that after your nightly skincare routine, you layer on products to sleep in. Come morning, you 'shed' it all off. The idea is that you wake with refreshed, cared-for skin and also spend less time in front of the mirror in the A.M. But is a Sleeping Beauty skincare routine worth the fuss? I tapped three experts to find out.

Meet the Experts

  • Sylvia Brownlee is an esthetician and founder of Skin By Brownlee & Co. She has 30 years of experience in the industry, starting her career in salon management before becoming the Director of Education at a skincare institution. She specializes in acne, hyperpigmentation and corrective skincare treatments.
  • Paula Brezavscek, PA-C is a board-certified physician’s associate and the founder of AZALA Skin Clinic in Miami, Florida. She received her Bachelors in Nutritional Science from Cornell University and a Master’s in Clinical Medical Science from Barry University. Her background is in dermatology and aesthetics, specializing in hyperpigmentation, acne treatments and skin firmness.
  • Dr. Mona Gohara is a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut. She is a member of The American Academy of Dermatology, The Women’s Dermatologic Society, and The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery; holds faculty appointments at Yale; and serves as a medical expert for mainstream media outlets.

What Is the Morning Shed Trend?

It’s all about, says Brownlee, layering products before bed to “work” while your sleep. When you wake, you strip it  all away with the idea that you’ll “wake up with the healthiest and most glowing complexion and/or hair.” It consists of multiple steps (not including your actual skincare routine or brushing your teeth), with common products such as:

  • Wrinkle patches
  • Overnight face mask
  • Under-eye patches
  • Lip mask
  • Mouth tape
  • Jaw straps
  • Hair wrap
  • Heatless curlers

As Brezavscek explains, “The visual of shedding layers to reveal ‘the new you’ is deeply appealing and very TikTok-friendly. It also taps into the collective desire to optimize our time. Why not wake up more beautiful with zero effort while you sleep? Plus, there’s a level of self-care and control built into this ritual that feels empowering. It says, ‘I’m investing in myself, even in my sleep.’” But while the trend is meant to be this creative self-care regimen, it still begs the question: Is this really necessary?

I’ll admit, the videos enticed me to sit down and watch the whole process. While I don’t often see a significant change in their morning results, I merely witnessing product after product being removed has me, the viewer, waiting for the reveal. It’s also just straight up satisfying watching them pull each ‘layer’ ceremoniously off one by one.

Does the Morning Shed Trend Actually Work?

The experts say some of the steps can be helpful, but the whole thing leans more toward fad culture. Face masks certainly help boost hydration, and eye patches reduce puffiness. Heatless curlers and silk wraps can protect your strands while you sleep. Even taking a step further and adding a scalp serum to strengthen and thicken hair while you snooze. But it’s reeks of getting a rise out of the internet. All these steps together can cause irritation and discomfort.

“It has the potential to be both beneficial and harmful. If done thoughtfully, it can enhance skin health and support a consistent nighttime routine. But when taken too far, or layered with too many products and gimmicks, it can irritate the skin, disrupt sleep and create unrealistic expectations about overnight results,” says Brezavscek. “The morning shed should be gentle. If the goal is long-term hair health, take your time and treat your strands with care,” adds Dr. Gohara.

Should I Try the Morning Shed Trend?

If you are going to attempt the trend, Brownlee suggests consulting with a skincare professional before combining multiple products for an extended period of time and be mindful of ingredients and textures. “Since this trend focuses on a transformative removal process to wake up with glowy, plump skin, it can be costly and time-consuming. Additionally, it is not tailored for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin, as excessive layering of products can cause irritation and breakouts. Choose the steps that make sense for you and your skin!,” she explains.

Dr. Gohara agrees, telling me how important it is to customize the experience to fit your skin and hair type. “If people start mimicking routines that aren’t suited to their hair or skin type just for the aesthetic of a morning shed, they could over-style or cause damage. It’s always important to personalize the process.”

I found out the hard way when I tried an overnight sleep mask. I was left with major breakouts and couldn’t actually sleep knowing I had a huge sheet on my face. But look, if the ‘morning shed’ sparks joy for you, go for it. It’s also OK to keep your nightly ritual as is. As Brezavscek concludes, “I love the intention behind it. The commitment to routine, the emphasis on self-care, the celebration of progress, it’s all lovely. But great skin doesn’t require theatrics. You don’t need 10 devices and a silk bonnet to wake up looking refreshed. In dermatology, consistency always wins over intensity. Hydrate, sleep, wear your SPF and be kind to your skin. That’s the real morning glow.”
