Between determining my zodiac sign's love language—one ex-boyfriend told me it was cash (!), but actually it’s gossip—and knowing exactly what to do on a full moon (charge my crystals and exercise, duh), I thought I was pretty dialed in to most things zodiac. Then I heard some friends talking about dating their astrological opposite signs and how it impacted their relationships. Mind. Blown. My friends explained how each astrological sign has an opposite, and that knowing your sign’s opposite can be useful for behavioral insights. For example, as a Gemini, my opposite sign is Sagittarius. And I have indeed dated a Sag. One with whom I was alternately charmed and annoyed in a unique way…could this have something to do with our opposing signs? I consulted an astrological authority to find out.

What Is a Zodiac Opposite Sign?
In a nutshell, zodiac opposite signs are signs that are directly across from each other on the zodiac wheel. “A zodiac wheel is a representation of the ecliptic plane—basically the sun’s trajectory across the sky,” Grim explains. “The circle is 360 degrees by nature, so you have 12 signs in that circle and each takes up 30 degrees. The net effect is that every sign has an opposite across the wheel.” Grim says signs that are across from each other have a different relationship than signs that are situated right next to each other. “Looking at your opposite sign is a way to find balance in yourself,” he says. “As well as a way to harmonize with another person.”
What Are the Opposite Zodiac Signs?
Opposite zodiac signs sit directly across from each other on the wheel:
- Aries and Libra
- Scorpio and Taurus
- Gemini and Sagittarius
- Cancer and Capricorn
- Leo and Aquarius
- Virgo and Pisces
How Zodiac Opposite Signs Relate to Each Other
Opposite signs, surprisingly, have more in common than in opposition, says Grim: “They have a similar focus or themes, but different approaches,” he says. The astrologer breaks is down as such:
- Aries and Libra: Both signs are concerned with relationships—Aries has a strong relationship with the self (think of the hard-headed ram) while Libra, symbolized by balanced scales, is concerned with the relationship with community. Thus, each sign has a lot to teach other about areas of relationships to grow in.
- Scorpio and Taurus: Both concerned with possessions, Taurus naturally accumulates material possessions, while Scorpio is collecting underlying subconscious experiences. More practically, Scorpio gets stability from Taurus, who in turn receives depth from
- Gemini and Sagittarius: Both crave discovery; Gemini curiously explores a range of topics superficially for the fun of it, while Sagittarius is seeking a more macro understanding
- Cancer and Capricorn: Each sign’s archetype wants to establish things; Cancer wants to establish a home and family, a comfort zone, while Capricorn’s idea of accomplishment is career success and a strong community reputation
- Leo and Aquarius: Both are focused on expression. While Leo is vibing on her creative child, Aquarius is concerned with the group and the needs of the collective. The net positive from a collab of these two signs? Leos can teach Aquarius to be more individually expressive and Aquarius can teach Leo how to transcend her own ego.
- Virgo and Pisces: Each sign deals with service to others. Virgo uses a hard skill set and niche abilities, but can get over-obsessed by details. Pisces by contrast is more oriented toward serving a higher power or through caring. In short, Virgo can help Pisces come down to Earth, while Pisces can show Virgo how to lighten up.
Are Opposite Zodiac Signs Soulmates?
Grim says that there are so many other factors, astrological, philosophical and otherwise, that go into making a suitable friend and lover. So just going by opposite sign is not conclusive. However, he does share this wise tidbit: “Opposite signs are there to help you to grow, to help you learn to consider another approach.” The astrologer says that your interactions with your opposite sign may be uncomfortable at first, because their style and/or approach is opposite to how you would tackle things, but he suggests taking a beat to reserve judgement of your partner’s style, and to see how it ebbs and flows with your approach. “There is some kind of commonality, so by sharing our perspectives, you’re creating an alchemical effect,” Grim says. “Alchemizing and not isolating those perspectives is a way to gain more balance.
