Baby names are often a debate between parents, especially if your partner insists on a family name you just cannot get behind. If you’re a Swiftie, on the other hand, odds are you’ve tried to sneak a few Taylor Swift-inspired baby names into the mix. We may not be blessed to have Taylor Swift name our kids—like Ryan Reynolds joked about on the Today Show—but we definitely can draw inspiration from her songs. Even if you aren’t a fan of the “Fearless” singer’s music, one of these 26 names may capture your attention because, despite my own Swiftie bias, they’re gorgeous and timeless.
26 Taylor Swift-Inspired Baby Names That Are Out of a Swiftie’s Wildest Dreams
“Willow” has a pretty ring to it
Girl Names
1. Betty
- Song Title: “Betty”
- Lyric: “Betty I won’t make assumptions about why you switched your homeroom, but I think it’s ‘cause of me”
Taylor used Reynolds’s and Blake Lively’s kids’ names in her songs on her eighth studio album Folklore, including their daughter Betty. The name has English and Hebrew roots and has the same meaning as the name Elizabeth, since it’s a nickname for the full version, meaning Oath of God.
2. Ivy
- Song Title: “Ivy”
- Lyric: “Stop putting your roots in my dreamland my house of stone, where ivy grows and now I’m covered in you”
This is personally one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs on her ninth studio album, Evermore. While ivy isn’t a person, it depicts the idea of a woman getting so passionately caught up in something it consumes her quickly. The name itself is English and Latin, and as you might have guessed, it means “vine.” Ironically, it’s a Greek symbol of faithfulness and fidelity, while the song represents infidelity between a husband and wife.
3. Rebekah
- Song Title: “the last great american dynasty”
- Lyric: “Rebekah rode up on the afternoon train, it was sunny”
Swift wrote this song about the story of Rebekah Harkness, a philanthropist, composer and socialite, among other things, whose mansion in Rhode Island she purchased in 2013. The Hebrew name means “captivating.”
4. Cassandra
- Song Title: “Cassandra”
- Lyric: “So they killed Cassandra first ‘cause she feared the worst”
While the lyric may deter you from using the name for your future daughter, it is a beautiful name. The Greek origin of Cassandra means “shining upon man” and refers to Trojan princess Kassandra whose heroic foresight predicted the Trojan War, but because of a curse from Apollo, nobody believed her. Cass, Cassie and Cassia are all common nicknames of the strong, beautiful full name, Cassandra.
5. Robin
- Song Title: “Robin”
- Lyric: not available
The English name means “bright” and “shining.” The sweet name has an innocent sound to it to suit a baby girl, which fits the song well, too. In the lyrics, Swift notes the innocence of growing up and the blissfulness of the imagination and wide-eyed, carefree mindset.
6. Este
- Song Title: “no body, no crime”
- Lyric: “Este’s a friend of mine, we meet up every Tuesday night for dinner and a glass of wine”
Classic and older names are very popular right now, and Este is one of my favorites. A go-to nickname for Esther or Estelle, and means “star,” according to the Persian origin. The name Esther has biblical ties to the Old Testament, who was the Persian King’s wife and put her life on the line to save herself and her people from being ruled over by an antisemitic royal advisor.
7. Sophia
- Song Title: “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus”
- Lyric: “Hands in the hair of somebody in the darkness named Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus and I just watched it happen”
The Greek name means “wisdom” and is a very strong, feminine name for a young girl. The name even contributes to the word “philosophy,” which means the “love of wisdom.” Sophia is a very popular name, consistently ranking top 10 for girl names in the United States for nearly a decade.
8. Dorothea
- Song Title: “dorothea”
- Lyric: “Hey Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me?”
Fans speculated that this song is about Taylor Swift’s friendship with Selena Gomez going through a drift, but even so, if you’re a fan of old-fashioned names, Dorothea is darling. With sweet nicknames like Dottie or Thea, it offers a bit of versatility, too. It’s of Greek origin and means “gift of God.”
9. Inez
- Song Title: “betty”
- Lyric: “You heard the rumors from Inez, you can’t believe a word she says most times, but this time it was true”
The Portuguese name Inez is a sweet girl’s name meaning “pure.” Inez is the name of Reynolds’s and Lively’s middle daughter, where Swift drew inspiration for the name in her song. If you’re looking for something a little more unique than classic, this one fits the bill.
10. Hope
- Song Title: “august”
- Lyric: “To live for the hope of it all”
Swift sings about hope in a lot of her songs, this lyric being one of the most memorable. Hope comes from English roots and is one of three theological virtues (including charity and faith). It’s derived from the Old English word hopian, which means “hope.”
11. Willow
- Song Title: “willow”
- Lyric: “Life was a willow and it bent right to your will”
This ethereal name is from Old English, meaning “willow tree.” While the trees are beautiful and statuesque, they’re also quite useful, with their branches being used for wicker and medicinal properties like pain relief because of a chemical, salicin, in the bark. They are symbolic of rebirth, power and more.
12. Cornelia
- Song Title: “Cornelia Street”
- Lyric: “’I rent a place on Cornelia Street’ I say casually in the car”
Someday, when your little girl is older you can take her on a trip to New York City and show her the Cornelia Street apartment she was named after from one of the best Swift albums of all time (yes, more bias). Cornelia is a Latin name which literally means “horn,” but represents womanly virtue in Ancient Rome.
13. Mary
- Song Title: “Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)”
- Lyric: not available
Mary comes from the title of a song on Swift’s debut studio album, not a lyric. The song explores two kids who grew up around one another and fall in love, growing old together. The name Mary is Latin and Greek meaning “star of the sea” and “bitterness.” While the rooted meaning of the name doesn’t exactly create inspiration, it’s usually attributed to the Christian faith, representative of Mary, mother of Jesus.
14. Juliet
- Song Title: “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)”
- Lyric: “Little did I know that you were Romeo, you were throwin’ pebbles and my daddy said, ‘stay away from Juliet’”
From a literary perspective, Romeo and Juliet depict deep yet forbidden love between two young kids. The name Juliet is of Latin, French and English origins and means “youth.” It has a beautiful ring to it and the romantic ties make it such a well-known, beloved name.
15. Clara
- Song Title: “Clara Bow”
- Lyric: “You look like Clara Bow”
Clara Bow was a silent film actress and “it girl” in the ‘20s, whom Swift mentions in her song named after the star. The name comes from Latin descent and means “bright” and “famous,” which is fitting. The vintage, classic flair of the name and its meaning may destine you for a little girl who craves the spotlight.
16. Emma
- Song: “When Emma Falls In Love (Taylor’s Version)”
- Lyric: “When Emma falls in love, she paces the floor, closes the blinds and locks the door”
In this song, Emma is an effortlessly cool girl with an intoxicating personality that everyone loves, but she only lets her guard down when she’s alone, until she meets the right guy. Emma is German and means “whole.” It’s a strong, feminine name that’s held a favorite top spot for years.
17. Marjorie
- Song Title: “Marjorie”
- Lyric: “Watched as you signed your name ‘Marjorie,’ all your closets of backlogged dreams and how you left them all to me”
In honor of her late grandmother, Taylor reminisces on her wisdom and legacy in her own life. Marjorie is definitely an old-fashioned name in a traditional sense, but it has a charming ring to it that may fit with your style preference. It derives from the name Margaret and means “pearl”, originating from Old French.
Boy Names
1. Archer
- Song Title: “The Archer”
- Lyric: “I’ve been the archer, I’ve been the prey”
The name archer is commonly a boy name and means “bowman” with French, English and Latin origins. It didn’t become a first name until much later, but in the Middle Ages it was used as a surname for archery professionals.
2. Peter
- Song Title: “Peter”
- Lyric: “Forgive me Peter, my lost fearless leader”
This Greek name is a classic and it means “rock.” It comes from the name Petros and is traditionally intended to represent masculinity and leadership. More than anything, the strength behind the meaning of this name is a beautiful way to honor your son and welcome him to the world.
3. Romeo
- Song Title: “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)”
- Lyric: “Little did I know that you were Romeo, you were throwin’ pebbles and my daddy said, ‘stay away from Juliet’”
This Italian name is derived from the Latin name Romaeus and means “pilgrim to Rome.” You can’t ignore the Shakespearean tie to this name, in fact, it’s one to embrace if you choose this lovely boy name.
4. Stephen
- Song Title: “Hey Stephen (Taylor’s Version)”
- Lyric: “Hey Stephen, I know looks can be deceiving, but I know I saw a light in you”
This Fearless track was a toe-tapping bop, and even though the romance that inspired this song fizzled out, we were singing the name “Stephen” for a long time afterward. It is Greek in origin and means “crown.”
5. Dean
- Song Title: “Style”
- Lyric: “You got that James Dean daydream look in your eyes”
Dean sounds like he wears white T-shirts with leather jackets and leans on vintage cars with a toothpick in his mouth, which makes sense since it was most popular in the early ‘60s. It’s an English name that means “valley.”
6. John
- Song Title: “Dear John (Taylor’s Version)”
- Lyric: “Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone”
John is a timeless boy name that will likely always hold its value. It’s of Hebrew origin and means “graced by God.” While the name has strong biblical ties, it is also popular because it’s so classic.
Gender Neutral Names
1. James
- Song Title: “betty”
- Lyric: “She said, ‘James, get in, let’s drive’”
Not only is James a great first name for a boy or girl, but it’s also a fantastic middle name and complements so many name combinations. It’s an old school classic and comes from the Hebrew name Jacob. It means “supplantar.” James is the name of Reynolds’s and Lively’s eldest daughter.
2. August
- Song Title: “august”
- Lyric: “And I can see us lost in the memory, August slipped away like a moment in time, ‘cause it was never mine”
This is one of the most quoted Taylor Swift songs and most popular from Folklore. While August is growing in popularity for boys and girls, the nicknames Augie and Gus are right alongside it. August is of Latin origin and means “great.”
3. Drew
- Song Title: “Teardrops On My Guitar”
- Lyrics: “Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won’t see that I want and I’m needing everything that we should be”
With famous names like Drew Barrymore and Drew Carrey, this name is popular amongst men and women. This Welsh name means “wise” and “courageous” to boldly welcome your little one to the world.
