When I say my dog is picky with his food, I mean he's *picky.* For the majority of his life, he's only deigned to eat his kibble when it's late enough at night that he's sure he's not getting anything better, or occasionally with some encouragement via cheese sprinkled on top. So, naturally, I've always been hesitant to drop extra cash on human-grade dog food because, honestly, I figured it would go bad by the time he got around to eating it. But recently, I had the chance to test out The Pets Table—and it's safe to say we're never going back (especially since he's refusing to eat anything else now). Here's what you need to know about the brand's human-grade food developed by the makers of Hello Fresh and my (well, my pup's) experience trying it out.

The Pets Table

First things first, if you're also looking to upgrade your pup's food, you have a few different options with The Pets Table. You can choose from air-dried food, fresh (which arrives frozen and is then defrosted), a mix of both or half-portions of fresh/frozen to be used as a topper. Once you decide which you'd like, you simply fill out a form providing information about what you're looking to get out of your pup's food, their age, breed, weight and more.

As for the cost, depending on your responses, the brand will list a few different plan options, along with prices per meal listed (mine, for a dog between 1 and 15 pounds, showed prices ranging from $0.99-$1.87 per meal). Then, if you select the "fresh" plan like I did, you'll be presented with chicken casserole, turkey casserole and beef stew meal options, and you can choose to receive either all of the same or any combination of those in your order. After choosing one of each, I reached the final payment stage that displayed a $63.35 cost for a two week trial box—though this will vary depending on your dog's size and other selections. However, if you want to try out just a single bag of air-dried food, a pack of frozen human-grade food, or even some treats or supplements, they're actually available individually at Chewy (where you can also set up a subscription once your pup inevitably falls in love with it).

Everything I (and My Dog) Loved About The Pets Table

Now, getting into what it was actually like receiving human-grade dog food from The Pets Table, I'd say there's a lot to love. After defrosting the food for somewhere between 12 and 24 hours, as recommended by the brand, I placed some on top of my dog's usual food. (To allow them to adjust, it should be mixed for the first seven days, as shown on the feeding guide in the second photo above.) We've already talked about how picky he is, so imagine just how surprised I was to find the food *gone* by the time I sealed it back up in the refrigerator and washed my hands. Since that first time, any time he sees me reach for the food, he comes running over to his bowl to wait for it—a huge change from his previous eating habits. So, honestly, for this alone, I think this food is more than worth it.

Besides the taste that my pup apparently loves, The Pets Table's offerings are also formulated with high-quality ingredients like chicken, turkey, beef, chickpeas, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and more, plus a mix of vitamins and minerals like vitamin E, vitamin D, omega-3, vitamin A and zinc. This definitely adds to the food's value for me, too, because I know he's getting a well-rounded meal and shouldn't need any other vitamins or supplements along with it.

And finally, I love the option to use it as a meal topper mixed with his usual kibble (the method I've continued with) because it allows me to get a little more bang for my buck out of the subscription. I've noticed that with it mixed in, he eats more of the kibble than he used to, likely since it has some better flavoring on top—so it's a win for us both.

A Few Things to Consider

One thing to consider when ordering The Pets Table is that, while the food is described as fresh, it comes completely frozen and is delivered with dry ice, which should be allowed to melt outside for a day before disposing of it (which could be tough if you live in an apartment without easy access to outdoor space). Additionally, as I mentioned above, the food has to be defrosted in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours before feeding it to your pup. I recommend keeping at least two packets refrigerated at a time in case you forget to take one out of the freezer for the next day, especially if you have a picky dog like mine who will (now) refuse to eat without it. And last, specific prices aren't listed for each subscription option if you order through The Pets Table's website, so you have to go through the full quiz before you know how much it might cost you.

The Bottom Line

The Pets Table

All things considered, there's no way I'm going back to feeding my pup kibble alone after trying The Pets Table's human-grade food. The simple fact that he's actually excited to eat every day makes it more than worth it for me, and the quality ingredients and added vitamins totally seal the deal. So if you also have a picky eater on your hands, go ahead and try out your own trial kit (or just go ahead and order a pack) below. After all, your furry best friend deserves the best.
