Melissa McCarthy Stuns in Heartbreaking New Trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Starling’

It’s been a while since a movie has majorly pulled at our heartstrings. (Picture us ugly crying as Awkwafina says goodbye to Zhao Shu-zhen.) Luckily, Netflix’s all-new film, The Starling, is here to fill that void.

The streaming service just dropped the first official trailer for the highly anticipated drama, which stars Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd as a grieving couple.

The trailer introduces viewers to Lilly (McCarthy), who is expecting a baby with her husband, Jack (O’Dowd). After a tragic event, they become overwhelmed with grief. While Jack turns to a psychologist to help him cope with the pain, Lilly strikes up an unlikely friendship with a pesky bird.

“We’re gonna move on and move up,” Lilly says in the clip. “We’re gonna find an even better life than the one we had.”

Through all the ups and downs, they must lean on each other for strength. “My wife wouldn’t know how to quit, and I love her so much for it,” Jack says through tears. “I wanna not quit with her.”

Other cast members include Kevin Kline, Daveed Diggs, Timothy Olyphant, Laura Harrier, Loretta Devine, Skyler Gisondo, Rosalind Chao, Veronica Falcón and Kimberly Quinn. The movie was directed by Theodore “Ted” Melfi (Hidden Figures), while Matt Harris (Most Daring) penned the script.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “A woman adjusting to life after a loss contends with a feisty bird that’s taken over her garden—and a husband who’s struggling to find a way forward.”

The Starling will hit theaters on September 17 before premiering on Netflix on September 24.
