This Riveting True-Crime Series Is Now #1 on Netflix

Be prepared to be surprised

I’m always game for a riveting true-crime show that keeps me on the edge of my seat, and right now there is a new number one series on Netflix that has everybody talking. Described as being “must-watch” television, Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer is a critical examination of the hunt for the Long Island serial killer through the perspective of his victims, their families and the police. For clarity, this documentary highlights the Gilgo Beach serial killings aka the Long Island serial killings, which were a series of targeted murders that spanned from 1993, all the way until 2011.

While the killings themselves date back to the beginning of 1990s, for the most part, police did not start discovering the remains of the victims until sometime around 2010/2011 with the disappearance of a young woman named Shannan Gilbert circa May 2010 in Oak Beach (which was viewed as shocking as it is a gated community generally considered safe with a low crime rate to match). As the police began looking deeper into Gilbert’s disappearance, connections started being made to the disappearances of other young women in that area over the previous two decades, with many of the victims working as escorts eventually being uncovered as the main commonality.

After years of intense investigations combined with a couple of road blocks, a suspect was finally arrested and charged with the murders in July 2023. And while I don’t want to give too much away, the revelation of who this individual is serves as a harsh reminder that sometimes it is the person we least expect that is responsible for doing the most unimaginable acts.

I gave this docuseries a watch earlier this week, and found it to be well-directed and interesting—especially since you get to hear from the families directly, and see the bond they’ve been able to develop over the years as they work together to pursue justice for their loved ones.

If you’re looking for something to add to your watchlist this weekend, I highly recommend giving Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer a shot. You won’t be disappointed, and you’ll learn a ton along the way.

You can stream Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer now on Netflix.
