Who Are Denzel Washington's Siblings? Everything We Know

Did you know that he's a middle child?

I've lost count of all the Denzel Washington interviews I've seen, from his emotional tribute to his mother on The Late Show to his tell-all special on Better Man 365. The Hollywood star is quick to dish out wisdom and pithy one-liners that have stuck with me, but I rarely ever hear the Gladiator II actor discuss his siblings.

In case you weren't aware, the 70-year-old Oscar-winner is one of three, with an older sister named Lorice and a younger brother named David. The duo lead private lives, so you won't spot them on red carpets or see their names in headlines. Not much is known about their personal lives. Still, I did a bit of sleuthing and dug up some interesting details about Denzel's siblings—both of whom have carved out impressive career paths for themselves.

Lorice Annette Washington

Denzel's sister, Lorice, is an evangelist, author and singer, according to Net Ministries Network. At just four years old, Lorice started singing at her father's church. She studied Psychology at Briarcliff College, then earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spiritual Nutrition. She also wrote a book entitled The Anointing, Prayer, Fasting, and the Spirit-Filled Diet.

Per Vents Magazine, Lorice is also known for her social advocacy and support for mental health causes. The outlet reports, "Her involvement in various projects aimed at creating a fair and equitable society highlights her dedication to these causes. Through her humanitarian acts and volunteer work, Lorice demonstrates a vested interest in driving positive change within her community and beyond."

She also has pretty top-notch research skills, at least according to her brother. As Denzel told Esquire in 2024 that her research skills are unmatched. He revealed, "Here’s a fact: We’re descendants of George Washington. We’re ex-slaves. My sister did the whole genealogical history of our family. She is truly a genius. She’s good, and she spent forever figuring it all out. We still own land down there—not far from D. C."

David Washington

It's safe to say that David's life is even more private than his sister's, but mutliple sources, including Editorialge, report that he followed in his father Denzel Hayes Washington Sr.'s footsteps and became a minister. He also currently works at the New York City Water Department.

The outlet also reports that he is married with two children, but further details about his family haven't been disclosed.

Although Denzel typically avoids mentioning his brother, I imagine the pair have a close-knit relationship. Why, you ask? Because I've seen him mention his brother on at least two occasions—and judging by his gestures and genuine emotion, one can't help but think the actor has a solid bond with both of his siblings. For instance, during his appearance on Better Man 365, he revealed that he talked to his brother "constantly" in the final moments leading up to their mother's death. Also, while speaking with Stephen Colbert about their loss 2021, Denzel said, while blinking back tears, "She didn’t get cheated. Nor did my brother and my sister and I."
