'Your Friends & Neighbors' Is 'The White Lotus' But in the Suburbs—And I Love It So Far

A dark comedy that brings luxury stateside

Fresh off The White Lotus finale, my husband and I couldn't agree faster on the next series to start: Your Friends & Neighbors. Unlike the waves-crashing-against-rock island locales of the White Lotus, the new Apple TV+ series starring Jon Hamm takes place in American suburbia. But boring and dull, this suburb is not. I almost view the new dark comedy as a kind of an epilogue to Mike White's ritzy social satire—think: what happens when the terrible rich patrons go home? The answer? Your Friends & Neighbors.

A little more background: Your Friends & Neighbors follows Andrew "Coop" Cooper ( Jon Hamm). He's a recently divorced and even more recently fired (under sinister circumstances) hedge fund manager living in the extremely affluent suburban community of Westmont Village. Desperate, despondent and lost, he resorts to stealing from his wealthy neighbors. Through Coop's eyes, we viewers get a glimpse into the lives of the rich and not-so famous, which includes $400,000 watches no one notices are missing, Maseratis galore, and a lavish country club that works as smart set piece to bring characters together around martinis and tennis.

But, just like The White Lotus, I'm much less interested in the crime element—although it certainly creates fun tension—and more drawn into the characters. Hamm's Coop portrayal is funny, fresh and intriguing. Though the pilot kicks off with a bit of a crime mystery—who's the dead man lying next to Coop at the bottom of the marble-tiled stairs?—what's keeping me on the edge of my seat is what exactly happened between Coop and his ex-wife that led to her affair with his best friend and their divorce. On that note, it's also got a bit of that delicious soap opera element—you never know which neighbor is sleeping with who. (Like Coop is sleeping with Olivia Munn's character, but shh, don't tell his ex-wife.)

I'm also very much loving Amanda Peet, who plays Mel Cooper, Coop's ex wife. She brings a real humanity to the role, while still absolutely belonging in the bleachers biting her nails during her daughter's tennis game with admission to Princeton on the line. And just like The White Lotus, it's refreshing to see actresses over 40 portray women over 40. Peet's 53 and playing a 50-something divorcee. Wish it wasn't groundbreaking, but it's certainly something positive to note.

The first two episodes premiered earlier this April, and new episodes are released weekly. You can watch Your Friends & Neighbors exclusively on Apple TV+.
