Can the Gossip Girl Reboot Stand Up to the Original? Here's My Honest Review

1. Elite

  • Cast: María Pedraza, Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, Miguel Herrán

When three working-class teenagers are offered scholarships to attend a prestigious private school in Spain, a major culture clash ensues. But things take an even darker turn when this bitter rivalry leads to a murder.

2. The Bold Type

  • Cast: Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Sam Page

Think of it as Sex and the City’s fun younger sister, complete with fashion looks that Serena van der Woodsen would totally approve of. On the show, three close friends who work at a women’s magazine balance their careers with their personal lives, dealing with a number of complex issues along the way.

3. One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill walked so that Gossip Girl could run. The series, which mainly centers on the evolving relationship between two half-brothers, features stunning main characters who try to navigate their high school years. Plus, it tackles the ups and downs of friendships, sibling rivalry, teen marriage and everything in between.

4. The O.C.

  • Cast: Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Ben McKenzie, Mischa Barton

You won’t find as many upscale buildings in this teen drama, but it revolves around high-class families and offers some interesting commentary on class divides. The show revolves around a troubled teen named Ryan Atwood (McKenzie), who gets adopted by a wealthy couple. However, he finds it difficult to navigate his new life at Newport Beach.

5. Pretty Little Liars

  • Cast: Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Holly Marie Combs, Lucy Hale

Five high school friends who have drifted apart are drawn back together when they receive mysterious, threatening messages from an anonymous source who goes by “A.” This devious, all-knowing character will definitely make you think of the infamous blogger known as “Gossip Girl.”

6. 90210

  • Cast: Rob Estes, Shenae Grimes, Tristan Wilds, AnnaLynne McCord

The Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off is essentially Gossip Girl’s twin from the West Coast, since it chronicles the lives of elite students at West Beverly Hills High. It has the same soap opera elements that made us fall in love with GG, but it also tackles quite a few deep topics, including alcoholism and living with cancer.

7. Privileged

  • Cast: JoAnna Garcia, Lucy Hale, Ashley Newbrough, Michael Cassidy

While Gossip Girl was inspired by Cecily von Ziegesar’s YA novel series of the same title, Privileged was based on Zoey Dean’s How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls. It tells the story of Megan Smith (Garcia), a young journalist who, after a stroke of bad luck, becomes the live-in tutor for a Palm Beach makeup mogul’s entitled granddaughters. Oh, and GG fans? There’s a love quadrangle.

8. Blood & Water

  • Cast: Amamkele Qamata, Khosi Ngema, Gail Mabalane

Many have described the South African series as a cross between Gossip Girl and Elite—and it’s easy to see why. It’s got wealthy prep school girls, romantic drama and plenty of scheming to keep you engrossed. Join Puleng (Qamata) as she sets out to investigate whether a popular athlete is actually her long-lost sister.

9. Outer Banks

  • Cast: Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss

Set in a town along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the show follows a group of working-class teens (the “Pogues”) who try to investigate a mysterious disappearance. But in the process, they also deal with the wealthy “Kooks,” and issues like greed and drugs. We know—it sounds nothing like Gossip Girl, but if you especially enjoyed the soapy drama and romance, then you’ll love this mystery series.

10. Katy Keene

  • Cast: Lucy Hale, Ashleigh Murray, Katherine LaNasa, Julia Chan

Though it’s a spin-off of Riverdale, Katy Keene is like the teen version of The Devil Wears Prada, but with a touch of Gossip Girl. Hale stars as the titular Archie Comics character, who’s determined to make it as a fashion designer in the Big Apple. Murray appears as Josie, who continues to pursue her music dreams.

11. Legacies

  • Cast: Danielle Rose Russell, Aria Shahghasemi, Kaylee Bryant, Jenny Boyd

This spinoff of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals might raise a few eyebrows, since it follows a teenage vampire learning to control her impulses. Still, the Salvatore School For the Young and Gifted legit feels like a darker, magical version of Constance Billard School for Girls.

12. Make It or Break It

  • Cast: Josie Loren, Ayla Kell, Cassie Scerbo, Susan Ward

Inspired by the film Stick It, this comedy-drama centers on a tight-knit group of elite teenage gymnasts as they balance their personal lives with training for the Summer Olympics. Seeing the girls train at the prestigious Rocky Mountain Training Center will totally remind you of Blair and her squad at the exclusive Constance Billard. Plus, the show explores similar themes, from rivalry and revenge to relationship drama.
