Critics Are Wrong About This Underrated Denzel Washington Crime Thriller—It's Actually So Good

Did I mention that it's Oscar-nominated?

I've seen Denzel Washington play a wide variety of roles, including a corrupt cop, a no-nonsense coach, a desperate father, a terrifying mobster and a fearless civil rights activist. These characters have vastly different backgrounds, but Washington brings them to life in a way that demands everyone's attention, from their powerful presence to their weighty one-liners. So, when I came across his underrated crime thriller, Roman J. Israel, Esq., I was pleasantly surprised to see how he brought these qualities to a socially awkward defense attorney.

For those who haven't seen the 2017 film, it follows Roman, an iron-willed lawyer who takes on civil rights cases with his partner at a small law firm in Los Angeles. But when his partner passes away, Roman is recruited to join a prestigious law firm, where he's tasked with defending an innocent young man who's accused of murder. However, the case takes an unexpected turn and causes him to have an existential crisis.

Now, I won't spoil the film, but I will say that it's thought-provoking and very different from most of Washington's other films. Unfortunately, it bombed at the box office, grossing just $13 million against a $22 million budget. And right now, it holds a measly 55 percent on the Tomatometer, with critics calling it "intriguing yet heavy-handed." But guys, I'm so glad I still gave this film a chance, because it's an underrated gem wrapped in the most unexpected packaging. Here's why I think critics are wrong about it.

1. Washington's Performance Is Indeed Oscar-Worthy

Fun fact: Washington's magnetic performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Not only that, but he also scored nominations for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award—and I can understand why. Roman is arguably one of Washington's most fascinating and complex characters, with his unkempt afro, cheap suits and slight waddle of a walk. At first glance, it's hard to take Roman seriously, but when he opens his mouth he pulls a Columbo, and people discover that he's got a brilliant legal mind. Washington brings his usual brand of quiet strength to the role, yet he still finds that delicate balance between being a painfully awkward misfit and a valued intellectual. Also, as I watched the film, I legit felt like I was living in his shoes, and I couldn't help but root for the seasoned attorney.

2. The Film Explores What It's Like to Lose Hope

What happens when all of your hard work seems to go down the drain? When you get to the end of your rope and everything you stand for becomes a big question mark? The film deftly explores these questions as Roman is thrown the ultimate curveball and forced to reconsider his core principles. It appears that his efforts are meaningless and his circumstances only seem to get worse by the day, and so he becomes bitter and goes through a shift that causes him to violate his conscience. It's a devastating place to be in, and viewers are made to feel that frustration right along with him.

Seeing Roman speak out in defense of young Black men who were either treated unfairly or given sentences they didn't deserve is easily one of my favorite things about this film. It exposes some very real flaws in the criminal justice system—like the fact that court systems are so over-booked that there's a constant push to rush cases along, or that plea bargaining has become a go-to tactic that's often abused. Not to mention the general lack of proper legal protection for disadvantaged clients. Roman represents the ambitious, steadfast worker who's determined to fight against a flawed system—and I can't help but think that this film will inspire even more visionaries to create change.
