While we can’t deny that NYC and Paris lead many of the fashion and beauty trends, we can’t forget that London is constantly blowing us away with their bold styles, too. Whether it’s choppy bobs or puffer jackets, Londoners are no slouches when it comes to looking chic. And according to Alex Brownsell, a celebrity colorist who counts Harry Styles, Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Maisie Williams as clients and is the co-founder of Bleach London, there’s one beauty trend in particular that’s making a big splash across the pond right now: copper hair.

Red hair has seen its fair share of popularity these days. In 2021, various shades of red—from crimson red to soft strawberry—had their moment in the spotlight. But in 2022, Londoners are singling out copper as their favorite hue. “I think copper is a great alternative to classic blonde because it’s so universally flattering and there are so many variations to choose from,” says Brownsell. “Londoners are tuned into culture and are always some of the first to pick up on trends, so I’m not surprised copper is one of the most-requested colors in our salons right now,” she adds.

The shade has also become a hit for celebs. It was spotted at Milan Fashion Week on Kendall Jenner and Zendaya at the Euphoria (and at the Spider-Man) premiere. Even Sophie Turner recently brought the hue back. And then there are the reigning queens of the shade like Florence Welch, Jessica Chastain and Karen Gillan.

How Do I Get The Signature Color Myself?

The first step is sharing a photo reference with your hairstylist. As we mentioned, copper comes in many variations. Take Euphoria co-stars Barbie Ferreira and Sydney Sweeney for example. They’re both rocking a shade of copper in different tones. “If you want a darker, richer copper ask your stylist for a natural bronze copper or a rich auburn. If you want a lighter, more gingery tone, opt for a strawberry blonde or a caramel copper,” Brownsell shares.

Can I Attempt This Color At Home?

The short answer is yes. Brownsell recommends first bleaching your hair, leaving it on to fully develop before rinsing it out. Next, apply a copper toner over each section and let it sit for about 20 minutes and rinse again. Once you rinse out the toner, you’ll see a soft, golden hue left behind. For a deeper color, she recommends applying the Proper Copper Super Cool (a semi-permanent hair color cream) after the toner for a darker copper finish.

“If you’ve got naturally blonde hair, the toner and color will create a ginger hue on their own, but a bleached base gives a clean canvas for even, vibrant color all over,” she adds. To keep your new shade vibrant, Brownsell recommends adding a warm-tone shampoo and conditioner to your routine weekly.
