If you’re a fan of my work (hi, dad), you know that I have a foot problem. They’re flat. They hurt. And no amount of under-the-desk massaging can make it all go away (although, it certainly doesn’t hurt!). So I brought my yams to a podiatrist, expecting her to take X-rays and immediately strap me down to amputate or at least sit me down for a speech about how my insurance won’t cover the costly custom orthotics. But she said none of that. Instead, she uttered: “Ofoos?” “Gesundheit?” I followed. “It’s a brand of shoes. You should get a pair to wear around the house instead of being barefoot. I think it will help.” “Oh, wonderful! Another ugly pair of ‘comfortable’ shoes” I thought to myself as I clicked “Add to Cart” on the podiatrist-recommended sandals. Could my extreme pronation and top-of-the-foot nerve pain be eased by this “active recovery technology” footwear or was it a great marketing ploy? I had nothing to lose. I slipped on the Oofos OOahh Slide sandals…and never looked back. Here’s why a month later, I bought two more pairs.

Making the Oofos OOahh Slide Sandal My “House Shoe”

What I Like

  • instant foot pain relief
  • supportive
  • lightweight
  • machine-washable

What I Don't Like

  • wear out easily with everyday wear
  • same shoe style may size differently in different color
  • best worn barefoot
  • product names are a little confusing with extraneous “OOs”

Oofos

My foot pain almost immediately disappeared when I wore the shoes. They do as they promise: support your arches, absorb impact and fight fatigue with their OOFoam™ design and “patented footbed.” I found them especially great for standing in the kitchen and repeatedly lifting and setting down a 20-pound baby to keep him happy as well as,  easy on the knees for climbing stairs.. When the shoes were off, the pain came back. Shoes on it was!

Why I Bought 2 More Pairs of Oofos

Week after week, it became apparent that when I wasn’t wearing anything on my feet inside, they hurt—like if I spent the day at my parents’ or a friend’s house. “I’m gonna need a bigger supply of Oofos,” I realized—one pair for home and another to toss in a bag or even just keep on a different level of my house so that no matter what, I have these things on my feet when I’m indoors.

When Black Friday came around, I ordered two more pairs from Oofos: the same slides in a different color and the Oomg Sport LS Low Shoe, the latter of which I wear to exercise classes. Can you wear Oofos outside? Of course! I just like having my dedicated indoor shoes so that I keep up the habit of wearing them inside instead of falling back into barefoot life.

My Quips with the Shoes

  • The Support Wears Over Time. The shoes wear down with lots of use—no, duh. With the amount I’m wearing them—something like 12 hours a day,, I’ll probably want to cycle in a new pair every 6 months to maintain the same support.
  • With the Same Shoe I Needed Different Sizes. My first pair of slides in navy was a size 10. They fit perfectly. I ordered the same size in “cosmic gray” and they were too big. It was easy enough to exchange for a smaller size, but kinda weird!
  • You Can’t Really Wear Socks with Them. When I wear socks with the slides, they lose their grip and just feel uncomfortable. This is more an issue of convenience for when I’m coming back with bags of groceries, a baby and a toddler and want to quickly slide into indoor sandals quickly without having to take off my socks as well.

Fast Facts

  • Sizes: women’s 5 to 18
  • Material: OOfoam™

What Do Oofos Do for Your Feet?

The brand markets themselves as “active recovery footwear,” which means their shoes are designed to take some pressure off your feet as you move through your day by, as their website claims, cradling your arches, reducing stress on sore feet, knees, and back, enabling a more natural walking motion and reducing energy requirements at primary joints for walking. While I’m not qualified to say whether or not Oofos “do active recovery” on your feet, I know that my feet feel pretty great while I’m wearing them.

Is It Bad to Wear Oofos All Day?

Not at all! The only issue is that the support wears over time. The brand concedes as much, “If you are wearing your pair of OOFOS all day, every day, they may begin to wear out more quickly than a pair of shoes that you wear only a couple of times a week for a few hours at a time.” I also understand the pair of shoes doesn’t create an arch or necessarily strengthen my feet. If I want to work on that, I’ll have to do some more physical therapy, or at least toe yoga for now.

The Bottom Line

My Oofos Slides have been the most cost-effective foot pain solution in a long time—even if it means I’m replacing a pair every six months.  They aren’t a miracle cure for my collapsed arches or over-pronation, but they make it possible to work through those issues without searing pain. In a word, my podiatrist was right.
