Taylor Swift Just Anointed This Singer the Artist of the Summer (And I Called It Weeks Ago)

Isn’t it sweet, I guess so

Taylor Swift is known as a woman who gets behind other women—from her support of once-emerging talent like HAIM and Phoebe Bridgers, to her outspoken reproaches of slut shaming and her re-recordings designed to reclaim her songs from years of male ownership. But she’s also a discerning musician, and while she would never say anything nasty about another celebrity (well, not unless it was coded in a song), when she publicly calls a female pop star the artist of summer, we absolutely listen.

Her newest endorsement: Sabrina Carpenter, who actually opened for Taylor on tour last year.

The shout-out came on Instagram, where Carpenter posted a not-so-humble brag about her amazing past few weeks, saying, “And just like that you guys sold out the entire short n’ sweet tour, espresso went #1 at pop radio andddddd i slid down this slide :’) thank you all so so much!!!”

Many celebs, including Jenette McCurdy and Angela Kinsey gave their congrats. But the most notable one was none other than the queen herself, Taylor Swift, who wrote, “SUMMER OF SABRINA AND MAY IT CONTINUE FOREVER 😇.”

Not to pat myself on the back too much, but I totally called this back in June, when I said ‘Espresso’ would be the song of summer and Sabrina Carpenter, in general, would net out as a top trend of summer 2024. I have no doubt that you’ve heard the earworm, in which an apparently hyperactive vixen equates her keep-him-up-all night prowess to a double shot of caffeine (and at times, a Mountain Dew). The lyrics are truly inane. (“That morning coffee, brewed it for ya. One touch and I brand newed it for ya” Um, ok?) But it is catchy as hell and impossible not to bop and sing along with, which, quite frankly, is all I really want from a summer jam.

Carpenter shows no signs of stopping, with a new album dropping in August and a 29-date tour kicking off in September. And as for Swift? I’ll just be sitting here patiently, waiting for her to endorse one of my other highly important summer trend forecasts
