Kate Middleton just stepped out in a bold red coat that caught our attention for many reasons—but most importantly, it held a special meaning.
Today, the Princess of Wales traveled to Windsor with her husband, Prince William, to honor the Welsh Guards during the St. David’s Day Parade. The 41-year-old duchess wore a symbolic red coat that stood out amongst the sea of gray uniforms.
Princess Catherine wore a tailored, double-breasted coat by Alexander McQueen. While her exact style is no longer available online, we found similar versions by Michael Kors ($315; $170) and Anne Klein ($110; $73). Many believe the royal chose to wear this particular jacket because the color represents the Wales flag. (FYI, the flag features a green and white background with a bright red dragon.)
The Princess of Wales styled her hair in a braided updo and accessorized with suede knee-high boots, a snakeskin purse, leather gloves and a black fascinator. Princess Catherine also had a leek brooch (yes, you read that right) pinned to her lapel.
Per People magazine, the vegetable is symbolic because St. David had Welsh soldiers wear leeks on their helmets during battle with the Saxons, so they could identify their own.
The outing also held a special meaning to Prince William. Not only did it take place on St. David’s Day (a Welsh holiday), but it also marked his first visit to the Welsh Guards since he became the Colonel of the Guards in December. (He took over for his father, King Charles III.)
