‘Inventing Anna’ Star Julia Garner Has Been Chosen to Play Madonna in New Biopic, According to Report

Get ready to show off your best Vogue moves because Madonna’s life story is coming to the screen. And, after a number of worthy contenders auditioned for the role, it looks like the project has found its leading lady.

Variety exclusively reported that Inventing Anna actress Julia Garner has been selected to play the pop icon in the upcoming biopic. A source revealed Garner was chosen out of a dozen other actresses for the part. The audition process was quite challenging, with Midsommar star Florence Pugh, Euphoria actress Alexa Demie and Odessa Young in contention for the role. Singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira were also on the list of names.

Madonna will serve as a co-screenwriter, producer and director for the Universal Pictures project. The movie will follow her early days as an “oft-controversial artist and queen of perpetual reinvention.” Back in October, the Grammy-award winning singer revealed that she was almost done writing the script.

On Instagram, she posted a photo slideshow of herself reading the screenplay. “Grateful for the success of Madame [red x emoji], that my script is almost finished, and for the support of my beautiful children!” she wrote in the caption.

Garner has won two Primetime Emmy awards for her outstanding performance in the Netflix series, Ozark. She has gone on to star in the Shonda Rhimes miniseries, Inventing Anna, and Maniac (which starred Jonah Hill and Emma Stone). You may also recognize her from The Assistant, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Grandma.

Oh we’ll definitely be watching.
