Beyoncé and Jay-Z Almost Chose a Different Name for Daughter Blue Ivy

Blue Ivy was almost "Brooklyn"

Thanks to her iconic appearances at the Renaissance World Tour, plus her Grammy Award (which she won at the mere age of 9), Blue Ivy, 11, is a well-known name around the world... and she hasn't even hit her teens. However, it turns out that her parents, Beyoncé, 42, and Jay-Z, 53, almost named her something completely different.

In a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Jay-Z revealed Blue Ivy’s original name: Brooklyn.

Yep, turns out Blue Ivy was almost named after her dad’s birthplace, but then something changed along the way. Apparently, throughout Beyoncé’s pregnancy, Jay-Z says that they called their first-born a “blueberry.”

“Like, ‘Look at the little blueberry,’” he said. “You know, it was like a nickname for nine months. It was just natural. We just took the berry off and called her Blue.”

As PopSugar notes, the middle name “Ivy” was reportedly inspired by Beyoncé’s connection to the number four. The couple got the name from the roman numeral IV. (Beyoncé does have an album simply titled 4, after all).

When Bey and Jay welcomed their twins, Rumi and Sir, in June 2017, they also had special meanings behind those name choices.

That same year, Jay-Z hopped on the Rap Radar podcast, where he confirmed the meaning behind the newborns’ names. “Rumi is our favorite poet, so it was for our daughter,” he said in reference to the 13th-century Persian poet. “Sir was like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that...He just came out, like, ‘Sir,’” the rapper said.

Even if she had ended up with the name “Brooklyn,” we have a feeling Blue Ivy would've turned out equally iconic.
