Jingle All the Way may be a classic holiday movie, but let’s face it: Nobody wants to be Arnold Schwarzenegger battling crowds (and “sleazy con men in red suits”) to score the only gift your kid wants this year. But, due to COVID-19 production shutdowns sparking a shipping container shortage—making it harder to get products made overseas to the U.S.—experts are predicting that 2021’s hottest toys may be even harder to get than in years past.

This is especially true for sleeper hits, like products surrounding the Netflix show Gabby’s Dollhouse, says toy-reviewing authority and TTPM CEO Jim Silver. Manufacturers didn’t know the show would be such a huge hit, he explained, so they didn’t make a ton of toys to begin with. That, coupled with production delays, means they can’t pivot as quickly to produce and ship more. So, which toys are expected to be the hottest this year? Here are Silver’s predictions, as well as a few we pulled that have appeared on everyone from Amazon to Target’s “most wanted” lists.

The 2021 Toy Trend We Didn’t See Coming (But Makes So Much Sense)

1. gabby’s Dollhouse Purrfect Dollhouse Playset

While you can score this replica of the show’s iconic dollhouse for $56 at Target, it’s in such high demand that other sites are listing it for anywhere from $119 to $159.

2. magic Mixies Magical Misting Cauldron

Found: 2021’s answer to the Furby. Even adults gasped out loud during demos for this toy, which instructs kids to use the cauldron to mix a potion, causing mist to rise up and reveal a surprise, interactive plush. After the big reveal—and yes, there are multiple characters your kid could get—kids can play with their new friend (and its magic wand) to create other spells and tricks. (Psst: You can pre-order it now, since it doesn’t hit stores until Oct. 1.)

3. bluey & Jean Luc’s Caravan Adventures Playset

Many parents told us Bluey, the Disney+ show about a cartoon pup and her family, helped them survive the early days of the pandemic with their kids. Now, there’s plenty of merch to go with it, though the hottest may be this camper playset. People who have gotten their hands on one are already listing it on eBay for double the retail price.

4. play-doh Rising Cake Oven Play Set

Everyone from TTPM to Macy’s raved about this $20ish toy, which lets kids create a cake that magically “rises” in the oven. A bell dings to tell you when it’s ready, and you can even create surprise desserts that kiddos can cut open to reveal rainbow sprinkles, much like Flour Shop’s famed creations.

5. ‘paw Patrol: The Movie’ Ultimate City Tower Playset

TTPM and Target highlighted this as a must-have this year, and it’s easy to see why: The Paw Patrol HQ stands 3 feet tall and comes with six pups and Chase’s police cruiser, which you can launch down the massive ramp (just like the dogs do in the movie). It’s also a nice companion to one of Macy’s top picks for 2021, Marshall’s Transforming Fire Truck.

6. ‘paw Patrol’ Adventure City Play Mat Set

If your kid loves Paw Patrol but you can’t handle a toy taking over half your living room—or you simply want a gift that won’t set you back $100+ (!)—Amazon flagged this Adventure City Playset as a popular item for the holidays. The mat recreates the whole city from the movie, it comes with two cars and it easily folds up into its storage box when playtime is over.

7. barbie Dreamhouse, 2021 Edition

ICYMI, Barbie’s DreamHouse got a gut renovation this year, featuring an elevator, swing chair, rooftop party deck (complete with disco ball, of course) and a slide that takes Babs from the bedroom to her pool. The DreamHouse was the top toy SKU of 2020, Silver said during a September 2021 press call, and this iteration is already in the top five. He predicts it will become even hotter as we get closer to December.
