Who Is Blackpink? Here's Everything You Need to Know About the Stars of Netflix’s New Documentary

In case you haven't already heard, there's a South Korean pop sensation taking the music world by storm.

Meet Blackpink, the all-girl K-Pop band that currently boasts over 30 million Instagram followers, five Guinness World Records and a historic MTV VMAs win. And that's only the beginning, you guys.

With the recent release of their Netflix documentary, BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky, more people have grown curious about the group's history and how they catapulted to fame. How was the group formed? Who are the members? And what exactly can we expect from their new doc? Read on for more details.

Blackpink is a South Korean girl band that was formed by YG Entertainment. Though the first member joined the label as a trainee in 2010, the group didn't make their debut until August of 2016, when they released their first single album, Square One.

As for the group's sound, it's mainly a mix of K-pop, EDM and hip hop, although some of their songs (like "As If It's Your Last") have been described as a "mixed genre of music."

There are four members in the group: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa.

Jennie (24) was the first to be signed on as a trainee (she was only 14) and the first to be confirmed as a member of the girl group. Then, Thai rapper Lisa (23) became the second trainee at YG Entertainment in 2011. In that same year, Jisoo (25) became a trainee before landing a spot in the band, then Rosé (23) became the fourth and final member, signing on as a trainee in 2012.

In case you're wondering, the trainee program includes singing, dancing and acting lessons for young entertainers who want to become K-pop stars.

Blackpink doesn't have an *official* leader per se. However, fans have dubbed Jisoo the "unofficial" leader of the group—most likely because she is the eldest.

Quite a few famous names, actually. Their latest release, The Album, features collaborations with Selena Gomez ("Ice Cream") and Cardi B ("Bet You Wanna"). For Lady Gaga's album, Chromatica, they collaborated with the singer on "Sour Candy." And in 2018, the group worked with English singer Dua Lipa to release the song "Kiss and Make Up."

They sure did. Blackpink performed at the event on April 12 and 19 of 2019, making them the first ever female K-pop group to do so.

Jennie told Entertainment Weekly, "When we first heard that we would [be the first K-pop girl group to] perform at Coachella, it felt unreal. We still can’t forget the very moment we went on stage and saw the audience for the first time. That’s when we really felt that people were really listening to Blackpink’s music, and thanks to that experience, we gained a lot of energy and felt our fans’ love for us. So, it was a time for growth. It was.... very precious for us, and we’ll always remember it fondly."

You might have already scrolled past the title on Netflix, but you'll want to give it a second look—especially if you're curious to understand the story behind these ladies' rise to fame. The movie follows the individual journey of each member, offering some insight into their childhoods and how they grew to become part of such a successful band.

According to Jisoo, you can also expect to see rare footage of each of their auditions. She said, "We haven’t seen each others’ audition tapes before, so it was very fun," Jisoo said, referring to her group mates. "It was nice to see footage because it brought back so many memories."

Even before the group landed their Netflix doc, they starred in their own reality series, also known as Blackpink House. The show, which originally aired in January of 2018 on a South Korean TV station, follows the four members as they live together in their dorm.
