10 ‘Severance’ Season 3 Theories, After the Season 2 Finale

Agency, pregnancy and the logistics of the stairwell

Holy Waffle Party. We have a Severance season 2 finale, an hour and 20 minutes of propulsive sci-fi action, Freudian innie-to-outie discourse and more campy bloodshed than we’ve ever before seen in this show. (Anybody else sort of cackle at the repeated sight of dead Drummond holding the elevator doors?)

In typical Severance fashion, Ben Stiller and co. have done a superb job of solving the season’s most pressing mysteries while opening new ones for season 3 and offering up a ton of philosophical food for thought. We now know what Cold Harbor is: the ability to fully remove trauma from one’s psyche. We also know that Cobel has officially joined the resistance, that Innie Mark has a desire to live/laugh/love that’s stronger than helping his outie and, for the love of Kier, what the goats are for (as sacrificial offerings alongside murdered innies, of course).

But there’s also a lot that’s teased for season 3, which has officially been renewed. Here, 10 theories as for what’s in store.

Theory 1: Mark Won’t Be Allowed (or Choose) to Leave Lumon

Well, well, well…look who’s actually not trying to escape down the exit stairs. With Innie Mark opting to stay at work and abandon Gemma in the outside world, we have to wonder if he officially considers himself at war with his outie. Will he risk leaving the office and having his outie not send him back? And, if he even wanted to, would Lumon let him leave, knowing his outie orchestrated the plan to break Gemma out?

Theory 2: Mark Will Continue Reintegration

Now that the two Marks are both in conversation and seemingly at odds in terms of how to handle their reluctantly shared life, it seems more important than ever for Outie Mark to reattempt reintegration, which, as I see it, is the only way for his innie to appreciate the importance of saving Gemma. We know he paused on reintegration for the sake of his sanity, but perhaps he’ll go back down that road in season 3.

Theory 3: Gemma hasn’t actually escaped

Poor Gemma! Finally out of her testing rooms…and now stuck in a stairwell while her husband chooses his innie girlfriend over her! But what if things get even worse in season 3, with her getting recaptured by Lumon before making it out of the building. Or, what if she’s unwilling to leave without Mark, and tries to break her way back in?

Theory 4: Helly is the new Helena

In all the excitement of marching bands and gun-toting mammalian nurses, it’s easy to forget the scene where Jame Eagan ostensibly tells Helly he likes her spunk more than his own daughter’s. Could he be grooming her to come back to the dark side? Or would he potentially keep her severed full time?

Theory 5: Actually, Helly is Helena again

Not to kill the romance here, but what if, instead of choosing Helly over Gemma, Mark unknowingly chose Helena who is back posing as Helly again? There’s a knowing little smile she gives at the end of the episode that could be saying, “tricked ya!”

Theory 6: Somebody is pregnant

I’ve been floating this one for a while, and I won’t stop, damnit. For all the fertility talk and conference room sex this season, I still think somebody’s gotta be knocked up. The most obvious person is Helly (with either Mark’s innie or outie baby), but it could also be Gemma, as part of some live-forever dystopian Eagan sperm thing. Bottom line: we might need to put that crib back together.

Theory 7: Irving is Coming Back to Work with the Resistance

We know Outie Irv has been researching Lumon’s severed employees for a while, and it seems unlikely that he and Radar will now just sail off into the sunset. Could he come back next season, more research under his belt, to help Cobel and Devon break out severed employees from the outside in?

Theory 8: Ricken works for Lumon

Severance fans were suspicious of Ricken long before he sat down with Natalie for a potential book deal, and things just get weirder in the finale, with Ricken and his friends, appearing in the celebratory mural of Mark’s Cold Harbor achievement. Per Mashable: “Far in the back of the lefthand crowd, you can make out more characters who are unaffiliated with Lumon: Ricken's assistant, Balf, as well as his dinner-less dinner party squad of Danise, Patton, and Rebeck.” Are those seemingly minor characters actually more important?

Theory 9: Devon’s baby is an Eagan

Let’s take this Ricken thing one step further. If he works for Lumon and if one of Lumon’s projects is to use Kier Eagan’s sperm in their fertility centers, could it be that Devon got impregnated that way? We saw the scene where she hinted to Gemma that she was pregnant, but we don’t see if she used the clinic. Even if she didn’t, given the importance of babies in this show, it’s possible hers is more than meets the eye.

Theory 10: Fans will have to choose a Mark

Admit it: You were either disappointed or thrilled when Mark S. chose to stay on the severed floor at the end of the episode. (I’m team disappointed, for the record.) I predict this next season will further the Mark v. Mark plotline, causing fans to have to pick a side. A tough choice no matter how you slice it. But if it tips the scales, note that Outie Mark has way better hair.
