This Kevin Costner Doomsday Flick Just Hit Netflix's Top 10 & It’s Packed with Action & Sea Monsters

When it comes to ’90s films, Kevin Costner shows up a lot. And, as of today, one of his less-critically-acclaimed projects has made its way onto Netflix’s most popular movies list.

Called Waterworld, the movie takes place in the future, where all of the global ice caps have melted and left a world almost entirely submerged by water. As a result, one brave Mariner (Costner) is on a mission to help a young woman and girl to try to find dry land. The flick, which was originally released in 1995, currently holds the ninth spot on the streaming platform’s top ten list.

Watch the full trailer below.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “After the melting of the polar ice caps, most of the globe is underwater. Some humans have survived, and even fewer still, notably the Mariner, have adapted to the ocean by developing gills. A loner by nature, the Mariner reluctantly befriends Helen and her young companion, Enola, as they escape from a hostile artificial island. Soon the sinister Smokers are pursuing them in the belief that Enola holds the key to finding the mythical Dryland.”

Unfortunately, the film didn’t receive the best reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only did it get a critics score of 46 percent but it received a 43 percent audience score as well.

In addition to Costner, the film also stars Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Basic Instinct), Tina Majorino (Veronica Mars), Rick Aviles (The Cannonball Run), Chaim Jeraffi (Just Like Heaven) and Leonardo Cimino (Dune).

Hey, if Netflix viewers are enjoying it, we’ll give it a shot.
