I’m a ’90s Baby and the New ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Trailer Just Gave Me a Surprising Amount of Feels

I’m a ’90s baby, so my childhood revolved around Power Rangers. Not only did I have every VHS displayed in our living room (lined up, in order), but I also had a plastic mask that made me feel like part of the Mighty Morphin team (despite the fact that it was cracked and dented from years of overuse).

But, like every kid, I eventually lost touch with the “magic.” And as time went on, I started to forget the Power Rangers trivia I used to fire off at family gatherings.

So, imagine my surprise this week when Netflix dropped the first trailer for the 30th anniversary film, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always (which will premiere on April 19), and the nostalgia all came flooding back.

In normal circumstances, the family-friendly movie isn’t something I’d prioritize in my streaming queue (I’m clearly too old for Power Rangers…right?). But once I watched the new trailer, all those positive memories from my childhood came rushing back that I assumed were long gone.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the remake, which features the Power Rangers battling an evil villain: Rita Repulsa. It also includes the return of iconic characters, like Alpha 5. (IYKYK.)

As an out-of-date Power Rangers fan, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the teaser so nostalgic. Maybe it’s the original cast returning after 30 (!) years. Or maybe it’s the camera angles, which are reminiscent of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series that ran from 1993 to 1996.

Or maybe it’s the simplicity of the costumes and special effects, which pay tribute to the original franchise without feeling too modern (like the 2017 remake).

Or maybe it’s because the Pink Power Ranger reminds me of my older sister, who refused to respond to anything but “Kimberly” (the character’s name) for an entire year at age 5. But that’s a story for another day.

The trailer for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always has rekindled a sense of childhood magic I thought I had outgrown. And at the very least, it’s given me an excuse to revisit the nostalgia once more when the film drops on April 19.
