You know Margot Robbie for her incredible roles (The Wolf of Wall Street, I, Tonya and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, anyone?) and her killer style. Most recently, the actress starred in the Barbie movie, which earned her a 2024 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).

But, have you ever wondered about her personal life? The 33-year-old Oscar nominee has actually been married for years. “If I’m looking into my future 30 years from now, I want to see a big Christmas dinner with tons of kids there,” she told Grazia magazine. “But definitely not at the moment. That’s 100 percent certain.”

Here, everything you need to know about Margot Robbie’s husband, Tom Ackerley.

1. Who Is Margot Robbie’s Husband, Tom Ackerley?

In short, he’s a director and producer. Ackerley, 33, got his start as a floor runner on a movie called Big Fat Gypsy Gangster and eventually became a production assistant for the 2013 film Trance. He progressed up the assistant director ladder, working on The Last Days of Mars, Pride and eventually Suite Française, which Robbie starred in. Following his meet-cute with Robbie (more on that later), he became the third assistant director on the Mission: Impossible sequel, MI-5, then went on to produce I, TonyaTerminal and Dreamland.

He and Robbie founded their LuckyChap production company in 2014. They have a first-look deal at Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Television and have a whole slate of exciting projects, like Barbie starring Robbie (and directed by Greta Gerwig).

2. Where Was He Born?

Ackerley was raised in Guilford, Surrey, England, and attended school at Godalming College. Although he and Robbie lived in London when they were first married, they now reside in Los Angeles.

3. When Did They Get Married?

The couple wed in a private ceremony in Australia’s Byron Bay in December 2016 (the wedding was a total surprise to the public). In a classic Robbie move, she announced the news of their nuptials with a photo of her ring at the time on Instagram.

4. How Did They Meet?

Keeping their relationship under wraps has been the couple’s modus operandi since the beginning. In a February 2018 interview with The Guardian, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star explained that she and Ackerley were initially roommates in Clapham, London, England, after meeting on the set of Suite Française. A year into their living situation, their relationship blossomed into more while she was filming The Legend of Tarzan and Ackerley was working on the Mission: Impossible sequel. The catch? They didn’t tell their five (?!) other roommates. “We kept it a secret,” she explained. “Because we weren’t really taking it seriously. ‘Oh, whatever, we’re just mates, we’re just mates.’ And then…everyone found out.”

Robbie explained that things got “dramatic” in their household immediately. “I’m not going into the details, but s**t hit the fan. Our house turned into The Jerry Springer Show for a moment there. But then, the dust settled, and it was all good. Everyone was like, ‘No! This is going to ruin our group!’ And then it didn’t. It was fine.” Thank goodness.

In fact, their relationship did so little to dismantle their group that they still lived in the same place post wedding. The Australian actress joked that their roommates eventually had to tell them, “‘You guys had a wedding. You have to live on your own now.’ It honestly hadn’t occurred to us. We were like, ‘Hm, what? Just the two of us? That’s gonna be weird.’” Needless to say, they eventually got used to it.

5. Where Did They Honeymoon?

That’s actually a great story. As Robbie explained on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018, she and her new husband jetted off to Tahiti to enjoy their honeymoon. It was all post-matrimonial bliss…until Ackerley ran into Barack Obama, DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi in some rather revealing shorts. Robbie recounted the story on the show, saying, “Tom puts on these shorts, his oldest gym shorts…And they’re, like, really short and there’s nothing underneath. So he gets on his bicycle to ride there, and I’m like, ‘Whoa. Babe, you cannot wear those shorts. They’re like—you can see everything.’ And he’s like, ‘C’mon. Who are we going to run into?’” Famous last words.

6. Do They Have Any Children?

Not yet, but according to Robbie, they definitely plan to in the future. The actress told the Australian publication Sunday Style, “I want tons of children. Well, maybe not too many. I grew up in a family of four kids, so that sounds like a good number.” For now, the couple shares a dog named Boo Radley who’s been known to make Instagram appearances every now and again.

7. Does He Have An Instagram Account?

Ackerley used to be fairly active on social media (his handle is @alpha_meows), but don’t expect to see loads of photos of him and Robbie. They’re generally private about their romance and he mostly shares photos of him and his bros golfing and surfing. Every now and again he throws in a pic with his wife or dog, though.

8. So, What Has He Been Up To?

Ackerley’s schedule has been pretty jam-packed. The 33-year-old served as a producer for the Barbie movie (starring his wife).

Back in December, Warner Bros. released the official trailer for the movie and Robbie fully embodied the iconic fashion doll. Viewers saw many famous faces in the teaser, including Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa. Barbie—directed and written by Greta Gerwig—debuted in theaters on July 21, 2023.

“I’m a great advocate of doing business with your partner,” Robbie told Grazia magazine. “Being married is actually the most fun ever, life got way more fun somehow.”

9. Is It True Ackerley Was in the Harry Potter Films?

Yes, Ackerley actually got his start in Hollywood by playing an extra in the first three Harry Potter films. The English-born actor is listed as “Student” on the cast lists for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Robbie revealed this tidbit while visiting The Graham Norton Show, where she said, “Fun fact: My husband was in the Harry Potter movies...He was an extra. When he was a little kid he was one of the Slytherin kid extras.”

10. Will He Accompany Robbie to the 2024 Golden Globes?

Based on their past red-carpet appearances, there’s a good chance Robbie will bring Ackerley as her plus-one to the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Especially since she's nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) alongside Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Natalie Portman (May December), Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves) and Emma Stone (Poor Things).
