There are countless streaming options at my fingertips. So, when something catches my attention with the first two episodes (like this intense mystery-thriller), I take notice. And most recently, I can’t stop thinking about Netflix’s La Palma

The limited series just hit the streaming service on December 12, and it quickly claimed the number one spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched shows, before settling in at number two. (It’s currently ranked behind Virgin River, but ahead of No Good Deed, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma and Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.)

The high stakes thriller takes place on the picturesque island of La Palma, and it follows a family who embarks on what’s supposed to be a dream vacation. When they arrive, they learn that a nearby volcano, dubbed Cumbre Vieja, is on the verge of a devastating eruption. As the threat of a natural disaster looms over their heads, they must convince those around them to take immediate action.

Before you make assumptions, you should know that La Palma is *not* based on a true story. However, it’s inspired by a real place. The island of La Palma actually exists, and Cumbre Vieja is considered the most active volcano on the Canary Islands (it last erupted in 2021). Still, the fictional plot doesn’t make the series any less gripping—just watch the trailer below to see for yourself.

Cast members include Anders Baasmo Christiansen (Exit), Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Westworld), Alma Günther (Side om Side), Thea Sofie Loch Næss (Twilight of the Gods), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Meg) and Jorge de Juan (The Brothers Grimsby).
