Netflix’s database is filled with hidden gems, ranging from underrated thrillers to passionate dramas. Although the current top ten list is filled with throwback flicks, there’s one new addition that is gaining popularity.

The French thriller Ad Vitam just hit Netflix on January 10, and it’s already claimed the number one spot on the streaming service’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked ahead of Despicable Me 2, Despicable Me, Rush Hour, Due Date and Hotel Transylvania 2.)

The film focuses on a disgraced elite agent named Franck, who works for a counterterrorism unit of the French national police called the GIGN. His life is turned upside-down when his pregnant wife is kidnapped, forcing him to embark on a dangerous mission.

In case you’re wondering, the phrase “Ad Vitam” means “For Life” in Latin. The title was inspired by Franck’s father, who swore by the motto during his time with the GIGN.

Cast members include Guillaume Canet (All-Time High), Stéphane Caillard (War of the Worlds), Nassim Lyes (Under Paris), Zita Hanrot (My Sole Desire) and Alexis Manenti (Les Misérables).

The film was directed by Rodolphe Lauga (It’s Complicated), and it was co-written by Canet, Lauga and David Corona.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “To save his pregnant wife, a former elite agent must confront a devastating loss while on the urn from shadowy forces intent on burying a major scandal.”

Sounds right up my alley.
