When I first got my hands on the Kindle Scribe—which is currently 25 percent off during Amazon October Prime Day—I had no idea it was a device that I could use before, during and after work. Originally, I was under the impression that ‘Kindle’ was limited to eBook reader—but boy, was I wrong. This thing allows me to do so much more than read, whether it’s taking notes, making organized lists or annotating PDFs for a story I’m working on, which is exactly why you should make the splurge this October Prime Day, where you can snag deals on plenty of other cool electronics such as Beats headphones and the MacBook Air through midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 9. As a reminder, you will need to sign in or sign up for an Amazon Prime membership, since only Prime members can have access to this sale.

So below, find a full review of how this thing has quickly become an indispensable tool in my daily life.

How The Kindle Works as an E-Reader

Kindle

First and foremost, the Kindle Scribe has been delightfully flexible for an avid reader like me. Whether I’m lounging in my apartment or soaking up the sun outside, its 10.2-inch glare-free Paperwhite display makes it easy to read anywhere—squint-free. Even in direct sunlight, the screen remains clear and streak-free—and the included pen, which never requires recharging, adds to the experience (more on that below). Plus, when my roommate turns the lights down for a movie, I can keep reading without disturbing her by adjusting the screen light warmth or switching to dark mode.

It’s also *so easy* to customize how you read. I can adjust the font size and line spacing and increase the size of home screen text or book icons with the “large mode” setting. (Something I’ve appreciated, considering I’m blind as a bat.) I can also handwrite notes directly in the margins, which has been particularly helpful for dense book club reads, including White Noise. To that end, it includes access to millions of titles in the Kindle Store, and I’ve plowed through books on books from The Women to The Buy Side to Comeback (the latter is a must-read). Plus, as a writer, I love that I can tap and hold a word to see its definition instantly.

How The Kindle Works as a Notebook

Kindle

One of the standout features of the Kindle Scribe is its ability to convert handwritten notes to text. I often take handwritten notes during meetings or while brainstorming ideas, and with the Kindle, I can select a notebook, tap the "Share" button, and choose "Convert to text and email." This feature is incredibly useful, because I can preview and edit the converted text before sharing it—and you can also import documents directly from Microsoft Word (with a Microsoft 365 subscription). Add to that the fact that I can access my notebooks on other devices. Using the Kindle app on iOS, I can easily navigate to the “More” tab and select “Notebooks” to pull up the latest on my phone.

My favorite part, however, however, is the suite of organizational tools. I can create to-do lists using a variety of templates, including lists and calendars, to keep track of daily tasks. I can label and organize my notes into notebooks, folders and subfolders, making everything easy to find. And while I was never big on bullet journaling, this device has changed the game. It offers symbols and shorthand markers to track tasks and events—so it’s easy to plan my day or week—and the two-column layout allows you to view two pages side by side in landscape orientation. It also allows you to write, draw and create personal designs with four brush types—pen, pencil, marker, and fountain pen—each offering different line widths.

The Final Verdict

Kindle

The Kindle Scribe is more than just a reading device; it's a powerful tool for creativity, organization and productivity. (If you couldn’t tell from the rave above, I’m a total convert.) Plus—aside from the fact that it’s at the lowest price all year—it comes with a free three-month Kindle Unlimited membership. Long story short? You better snag it before it goes out of stock.
