three summer dresses for petites to consider wearing, from denim mini dresses to nap dresses

I never thought I’d be a short-fluencer, but here I am, having written about the best pants for my 5-foot-1 frame and fielding questions weekly about the best shorts for petites (answer: J. Crew), the best styling tips for shorties (hint: v-necks are your friend) and generally how to look like a normal person when you come up to everyone’s belly button (my motto: What Would Florence Pugh Do?).

So, it was only natural that I’d weigh in on my favorite summer dresses since, as we minis know, the standard to-the-floor sundress can leave us with inches of pooled fabric on the ground. My criteria for summer dresses? I want options in terms of length, style and sexiness. (Sometimes I want to look as hot as the weather; sometimes I need something I can comfortably eat three scoops of ice cream in.)

Anything I’m buying needs to be proportional on my size 2(ish) body; the straps can’t be too long, the waist should hit in the right place and anything that bills itself as ankle-length can’t actually graze my toes. These three dresses achieve all that, and more.

Made from a double-lined, high-performance ribbed material, this saucy little number is both super-tight (more on that later) and remarkably smoothing, holding everything in place and blurring any otherwise noticeable bulges. The petite length clocks in at 47-5/8 inches, which, on me, hits mid-calf and the side slit makes it easy to walk in. I’m wearing a size XS Petite, which is smaller than I’d usually go, but I read it ran large and wanted a more fitted look. Now, back to that tightness: This dress is incredibly tight, and from the side I sometimes look like I’m about to have my third child. So you have to feel confident—or, in my case, DGAF—to be comfortable in it. That said, I always get compliments and love that I can dress it up or down based on shoes and accessories.

One note: As of this writing, the scoop neck version is sold out in petite sizes, but there are still petite options in the high neck, cut-out and lace-up styles.

Does a Nap Dress scream 2022 cottagecore? Maybe. Do I care when it’s this comfortable and flattering? Absolutely not. I snagged the Ellie last year and have since worn it to places including but not limited to: a wedding, dinner with my grandma, a work picnic and a stroll around a Catskills mountain town (with a sunhat, obviously). Made from 100 percent cotton, this guy is machine washable and I’ve found that even with repeated wears, the elasticized smocked bodice doesn’t stretch out. I own mine in an XS, and while is there no petite sizing at Hill House, I don’t mind that it comes down to just about ankle length.

Finally, there are the times in summer when you need to be cute and comfortable, without anything clinging to your body. This denim shift dress is just the ticket. Again, there’s no petite sizing, but I own mine in a size 2, and I like that it comes to several inches above my knee, rather than appearing like a tiny mini dress the way it does on the model. Since I got it in June, I think I’ve worn it every single week, and while I haven’t washed it yet, I like that I could do so at home in cold water.
