Now that we’re finally in the midst of spring in London, people are emerging from their winter blues with fresh fashion trends, ready to soak in the warm sun and shed their wool coats. As a new Londoner myself, I’ve seen a few spring jacket trends dominating the scene from iconic British fashion brands like Burberry and Barbour, blending practicality with high fashion. From the iconic trench coat to the ever-popular leather bomber, these are the top five spring jackets everyone's wearing in London right now that you need to know about to stay stylish and comfortable through the unpredictable British weather.

1. Trench Coats

Are you surprised that trench coats are one of the most worn spring jackets in England? I wouldn’t expect anything else from the country where the style originated. Apart from their sleek and stylish exteriors, trench coats are functional to their core, with quality styles boasting heavy-duty, waterproof fabric, storm guards and pockets. For London locals, trench coats aren’t viewed as trendy like they may be in The States; they’re an essential wardrobe staple, acting as a potential raincoat (because you never know when you’ll get stuck in a torrential downpour) just as much as a fashion statement.

2. Barn Coats

Countryside weekend getaway or not, waxy barn coats are one of those staple styles that English women seem to reach for time and time again, particularly in the spring. Popular British brands like Burberry and Barbour are both renowned for their durable and weather-resistant styles, so it’s only fitting that the locals wear them on repeat. I’ve noticed tons of Londoners gravitating towards these classic pieces lately, perhaps because of their longevity and craftsmanship (many of which can be re-waxed after multiple seasons to last you a literal lifetime) or maybe because they’re innately British.

3. Oversize Leather Jackets

Venture out towards East London and you’ll be overwhelmed by all the edgy, out-there styles, like the cooler-than-cool oversize leather jacket. And can you blame them? London locals love combining practicality and style, both of which just so happen to be at the core of this trend. Not to mention, leather jackets are versatile, too, looking just as sharp paired with tailored trousers as they are with a boho maxi dress. The great thing about these pieces is that they’ll never go out of fashion, no matter what micro trend is buzzing about.

4. Quilted Collarless Liners

In the spring, British women love nothing more than the feeling of shedding their winter layers one by one. In their place, I’ve observed many people sporting quilted collarless liners as their preferred lightweight, everyday option, and it makes total sense. They’re designed as a layering piece to add insulation under winter coats and help trap your body heat, so they’re ideal for England’s unpredictable weather forecast. Plus, many modern styles look quite charming and almost handmade, thanks to the quilting, making them extra favorable for anyone looking to add texture to their outfits.

5. Running Jackets

The spring jacket trend that took me by surprise was none other than the functional running jacket, made from a sweat-wicking and performance fabrics like nylon. It could be because a lot of people are training for the London Marathon, but I actually think it has to do with the dominance of sporty fashion. Considering sporty trainers like Adidas, Nike and Onitsuka Tiger are the top shoe brands of choice, it makes sense that British women would incorporate more athleisure pieces into their looks when they’re off the clock.
