"Want to know how Atlanta was born?"

This, according to Taraji P. Henson, is the best way to sum up Peacock's riveting new series, Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. In case you've yet to binge the first six episodes, it chronicles the real-life robbery that took place in Atlanta on the night of Muhammad Ali's comeback fight. But more importantly, it details how this incident paved the way for Atlanta to become the "Black Mecca."

During our recent chat, Henson told me, "The history just blew me away because I had no idea about this heist. Didn't know that ever happened."

For context, this robbery was the biggest heist in Georgia's history. Following the big fight, the wealthiest gangsters were invited to attend an afterparty hosted by a hustler named Chicken Man (Kevin Hart). However, the criminals were met with armed robbers and forced to give up their valuables, which turned out to be a huge cultural milestone for the city.

Created and executive produced by Shaye Ogbonna, the crime drama is filled with "blaxploitation themes," complete with "afros and Farrah Fawcett flip hairstyles and groovy disco and R&B jams," according to PureWow's Associate Commerce Strategist and resident '70s nerd, Jael Rucker. Not to mention the star-studded cast, from Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Hart to Terrence Howard and Don Cheadle. In fact, it was the acting talent that immediately sold Henson when she first heard about the project. She told me, "Kevin was like, 'I got something for you, Taraji.' And I was like, 'What?' And he said, 'Me, you and [Samuel L. Jackson].' And I said, 'I'm in.'"

She added, "It was a lot of fun. I was most excited to work with Sam. So, anything that I had with him, any scene—we had a couple of one-on-one scenes—I will salivate for those things. I'd never worked with him before. He's definitely been on the top of the list of who I wanted to work with in my career. So, to me, that was most exciting, getting to work with one of the greats."

As for how Henson relates to her character, Vivian, she said, "She's a little more controlled than I am. I'm an emotional creature. That's why I never went into politics, you know? But Vivian is one who has to be calculating. She has to keep her emotions close to her chest because she works around a lot of men, and if she wants to get ahead and carve out a lane for herself, she can't do it emotionally, because that's not going to get her far. So, she bites her tongue a lot, and she's very calculating. I'm a little bit different. I'm calculating—but not like that."

The actress also revealed that collaborating with fellow A-listers on such an impactful series was a bit surreal for her at first. She explained, "I had an out-of-body experience the first time I was on set with everybody. I'm looking at all of us, and I'm taking in the entire setting. And there are the other actors who are just starting, and then there are the extras, and then there's us. I remember being [among] the other actors and the extras. I remember looking at the cast like, 'Oh, my God.' And then here I am on the other side of that. It just was like an out-of-body experience. This is the things you dream of, and you work so hard for...to have my name mentioned with all the other heavy hitters."

Whether you're drawn to the A-list cast or you're perpetually stuck in the '70s, you will easily get hooked on Fight Night. But beyond the solid performances and the '70s glam, Henson wants fans to know that there's a deeper message about the power and resilience of Atlanta's community.

She said, "I hope [the fans] get to see how powerful we are in numbers, like when we put our focus, our money in on the community, that's powerful, and we created the culture in Atlanta. We put Atlanta on the map. We did that. The culture did that. So, imagine if we really pulled together and put our resources together."

The first six episodes of Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist are now available to stream on Peacock. Episode seven airs on October 3, while the finale premieres on October 10.
