Antonio Banderas Thriller Hits Netflix Top 10 List—and How Have I Never Heard of It?

The critics clearly had *thoughts* on this one

While scrolling through the Netflix top ten movies list earlier today, I couldn’t help but notice that a 2017 thriller starring Antonio Banderas is currently sitting at the number six spot. And I had to wonder…how come I’ve never heard of this movie before now?

Security follows a former Marine who now works as a security guard in a run-down shopping mall. After he witnesses an 11-year-old girl being targeted by heavily armed mercenaries, he decides to do whatever it takes to protect her from danger.

Upon its release, the film received tepid reviews from critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Security received a 34 percent rating. On IMDb, the movie scored 5.7 out of 10. But clearly the Netflix audience disagrees (or doesn’t mind) since the film is already in the top ten.

Also sitting on the streamer’s top ten movies list is the new action-packed sci-fi film Atlas, which stars Jennifer Lopez, Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown.

Currently occupying the top spot on the list, this mind-bending thriller-drama centers around a brilliant data analyst named Atlas (Lopez) who is on a mission to stop a renegade robot from destroying humanity. With the use of AI, she tries to save the world from total annihilation.

In an interview with Netflix’s TUDUM, Atlas director Brad Peyton discussed Atlas as a character and why she plays a key role in the film. “The heart of Atlas is really about trust and how difficult it is to trust people,” he said.

Peyton continued, “Atlas is told through the lens of a woman who’s learning to trust after undergoing a trauma that’s upended her life. It’s a reminder of how we have to have deep, meaningful relationships in our lives, in one way, shape, or form. That you can’t do everything by yourself; you have to choose to trust people at a certain point and let them in.”

Honestly, bad reviews or not, you had me at Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Lopez.
