The Top 2 Movies on Netflix Made Me Do a Double Take

They're both family-friendly

For the past few weeks, Netflix’s list of top TV shows has baffled me. This is mainly due to Raw, which has dethroned several noteworthy titles (including The Night Agent and Sweet Magnolias) over and over again. And now, the top movies list is following suit.

Currently, the top two movies on Netflix are Plankton: The Movie (#1) and Despicable Me 4 (#2). They’re ranked ahead of Chaos: The Manson Murders, Midnight in the Switchgrass, Sicario and Friday

Plankton: The Movie was just added on March 7, and it’s already claimed the number one spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. The family-friendly flick follows a love story gone awry and focuses on the infamous character from SpongeBob. Not only does it feature an appearance by SpongeBob himself, but it also includes multiple familiar faces, including Pearl, Sandy and Mrs. Puff.

Number two on the list is Despicable Me 4, which originally hit theaters in 2024. The fourth installment follows Gru as he welcomes a brand-new member to the family. Of course, his “normal” life is threatened when a criminal mastermind embarks on a revenge mission against him.

I’m not surprised that Plankton: The Movie has been gaining popularity, especially since it just premiered. However, it’s rare to see a family-friendly movie in the top spot. And since Despicable Me 4 has also claimed the number two position, I’m thinking that children’s animation has a big future at Netflix.
