It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost four years (yes, four) since we were first introduced to married couple Nick (played by Adam Sandler) and Audrey Spitz (Jennifer Aniston) in the Netflix smash hit, Murder Mystery. Here we are once again, with a front-row seat to watch the crime-solving duo take on another high-stakes mystery in the highly anticipated sequel, Murder Mystery 2

In the second installment (which premiered on March 31), Nick and Audrey become the prime suspects in the kidnapping of their friend Maharaja (Adeel Akhtar), who gets taken by a group of masked assailants in the middle of his wedding ceremony. So, does Murder Mystery 2 measure up to the original? And do we finally get to learn why Nick has such bad aim?

Keep reading for an honest review of Murder Mystery 2.

The movie takes place four years into the future. In the present, Nick and Audrey have quit their day jobs to become full-time detectives. But, the only problem is that they’re struggling to launch their private detective agency, and it’s starting to take a toll on their marriage.

At the start of the film, Audrey is getting ready for bed and Nick proceeds to turn on his “whale sounds” machine to help him fall asleep—that alone drives Audrey nuts. This is just one example of the witty banter that’s shared by Sandler and Aniston, who bring effortless chemistry. Much like in the original, they fuel all the laughs with their funny puns and comical retort. Their line delivery? Spot on. Comedic timing? They don’t miss a beat.

Murder Mystery 2 has so many nostalgic references and easter eggs that fans of the original will notice. Throughout the movie, past characters from the first installment make special appearances, such as Colonel Ulenga (John Kani), Laurent Delacroix (Dany Boon), and, of course, we can’t forget Maharaja. In addition, the movie doesn’t shy away from reusing jokes from the original.

Although Murder Mystery 2 is a classic “whodunit” trope with silly puns, this new installment takes the audience on a fun thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the very end. Just when you think you’ve identified the true culprit (*spoiler alert*) you will be proven wrong over and over again.
