If you’re like me and you grew up watching the original The Lion King and then fell in love with the 2019 live action version (starring Beyoncé), then you'll be happy to get a first look at the highly-anticipated prequel Mufasa: The Lion King. Disney just released a teaser trailer for the film and a few familiar characters are returning—plus, a surprising new addition. Watch the clip for yourself below.
The Teaser Trailer for 'Mufasa: The Lion King' Is Here and It Has a Star-Studded Cast
Including a big star's daughter
The one minute and 32 second trailer opens with the iconic "Circle of Life" song before getting a voiceover narration from Rafiki (voiced by John Kani). Throughout the clip, viewers are treated to stunning imagery of the savannah and the many creatures that live there, including zebras, hyenas and lions of course.
The film tells the origin story of a young Mufasa, narrated by Rafiki to Kiara (aka Simba and Nala's daughter) with funny inputs from Timon and Pumbaa. We're transported right to Mufasa's childhood way before he became the king of Pride Rock. Through his journey we're introduced to a few new characters as they work together to defeat a common enemy.
Celebs like Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner will be reprising their roles. The prequel will also introduce newcomers like Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa's mother Afia, Keith David as Mufasa's father Masego and Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara. (Yes, the Blue Ivy is making her film debut!) Directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), you can also expect some chart-topping original songs from Mr. Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Excited yet? Yeah, me too. Mufasa: The Lion King comes out December 20, 2024—just in time for the holiday season.
