If you're in the mood for a bizarre documentary that feels like a remixed version of Tiger King, then I've got just the show for you.

In case you've yet to hear about the bizarre new docuseries that's taking social media by storm, allow me to introduce you to HBO's Chimp Crazy. From Eric Goode, the co-director of Tiger King, comes this four-part series, which revolves around a woman named Tonia Haddix. The former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker (and the self-proclaimed “Dolly Parton of chimps”) develops a rather fascinating bond with Tonka, a 32-year-old chimpanzee, while caring for animals in captivity. However, things start to spiral out of control when Tonka suddenly goes missing.

The official synopsis reads, "At turns hilarious and tragic, while unfolding with the pace and suspense of a thriller, Chimp Crazy explores the captivating, often unfathomable and secretive world of raising chimpanzees and also examines the colorful and complicated cast of characters that inhabit it."

It continues, "Flashing back to other dramatic stories of chimps living in captivity, Chimp Crazy broaches thorny issues around private primate ownership and the folly of imposing human traits onto captive apes who have no agency over where or how they live."

Goode has acnowledged the similarities between Chimp Crazy and his previous project, Tiger King, which revolves around former zookeeper Joe Exotic, but he told USA Today, "I think it's really a very different story...Maybe it's because it's a chimpanzee, and the closeness that the subjects have with these animals. In Tiger King, there wasn't that intimacy or affection to one tiger, and so I think that it's maybe more emotional, although there's a lot of surprises.”

While the first two episodes cover Tonia's mission to retain custody of the chimpanzees and PETA's investigation into Tonka's disappearance, episode three explores Alan Cumming's involvement in the case. Thanks to the actor's history with Tonka (he starred alongside the chimp in the 1997 film, Buddy), he offers a sizeable reward for information about Tonka’s whereabouts.

The first three episodes of the docuseries are now available to stream on Max, and the fourth and final episode will be released on Sunday, September 8.
