Perhaps it's the slow buildup of tension and suspense before the jaw-dropping plot twist. Or maybe it's the eerie, unsettling tone that heightens our anticipation. From compelling mysteries like Zodiac to mind-bending psychological thrillers like Gone Girl, these edge-of-your-seat movies have a way of getting under your skin.

So, if you're prepared to dive into another scary flick, I've compiled a list of the best thriller movies to watch on streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and more.

1. Promising Young Woman (2020)

  • Director: Emerald Fennell
  • Cast: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Clancy Brown
  • Run time: 113 minutes
  • Rating: R
  • Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 90% | IMDb 7.5/10

In his rave review, Philip Mutz, VP of News and Entertainment at PureWow, called it one of the "best movies of 2020" He wrote, "It is Cassie's devotion to changing the system one man (and in several cases, woman) at a time that lays bare just how helpless and unprotected our flawed system has left rape victims. The subject matter is truly what makes this film a must-watch."

2. Panic Room (2002)

  • Director: David Fincher
  • Cast: Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, Dwight Yoakam
  • Run time: 112 minutes
  • Rating: R
  • Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 76% | IMDb 6.8/10

From the director of Fight Club comes this intense, edge-of-your-seat flick where a mother and her daughter are trapped in their panic room after criminals break into their new home. You'll be watching with bated breath as the three intruders go above and beyond to smoke them out. At the time of its release, critics praised Jodie Foster's performance, but criticized the true suspense of the movie, with the New York Times writing, "Panic Room was skillfully constructed, no doubt at considerable expense, but it's hard to shake the feeling that nobody's really home." In the years since, however, the film has gone on to be considered an early 2000s cult classic."

Dana Dickey, PureWow's Senior Editor, adds: "Can I just say David Fincher's Panic Room is a WILD RIDE? Besides brimming with the director's signature creepy allure, the story is real estate porn of the highest order (hello row house period details) and also a talent bonanza including not only Forest Whitaker and Jodie Foster but also an early role from future Academy Award winner Jared Leto and the major film debut of 12-year-old Kristen Stewart."

Based on Darcey Bell's 2017 novel, the movie follows two women—Emily and Stephanie—who become good friends, despite being polar opposites. But when Emily mysteriously goes missing, Stephanie starts to investigate and discovers some terrifying secrets along the way. "A Simple Favor is so nuts, not only does it have one of the freakiest plot twists ever but also it really holds your interest with a palpable undercurrent of attraction between two friends Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. I love this movie as an object lesson in perception versus reality...and since a sequel is in the works set in Capri (swoon), this is a great entree to the characters," Dickey notes.

5. The Son (2019)

  • Director: Sebastián Schindel

Arguably one of Christopher Nolan's best works, this psychological thriller follows Leonard Shelby, a former insurance investigator with anterograde amnesia. Memento was also a critical and commercial success, earning $40 million at the box office on a $9 million budget, and receiving Academy Award nominations for "Best Original Screenplay" and "Best Film Editing."

"Memento is soooo good! It's Academy Award-winning director's breakthrough film, a formally audacious detective story in which the Guy Pearce is a completely original character—a detective trying to solve the mystery of his wife's murder, but who can't retain memories so has to piece his and her history together from Polaroids and clues he's written on his body. Just...go with it, and you'll be glad you did. Pearce is getting a lot of buzz from his role in The Brutalist, and he's equally charismatic back in this 2000 film," adds Dickey.
