Wait, This A-List Actress Was Up Against Margot Robbie for the Role of Barbie?!

From the moment we saw the first teaser image of Margot Robbie, 32, posing in the bubble gum pink convertible with that pearly white smile, it’s been impossible to picture anyone else but the Australian actress playing the role of Barbie in the upcoming live-action film. So, imagine our surprise when we learned there was another actress up for the part as well.

In a new cover interview with Vogue, the Barbie star revealed that Gal Gadot was the first actress considered for the titular role. In fact, Robbie shared that she and the film’s director  Greta Gerwig wanted the Wonder Woman 1984 star, 38, to play the role.

“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy,” Robbie told Vogue. The actress (the magazine’s latest cover model) continued, “Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.”

So, what happened? Sadly, Gadot couldn’t accept the role for reasons unknown. And before the role went to Robbie, there was another actress considered to play the lead: Amy Schumer.

Back in March 2016, news outlets reported the comedian was set to play Barbie in the movie. But four months later, Schumer had to leave the project due to “scheduling conflicts” (per Buzzfeed News).

And in the end, the Barbie role went to Robbie.

Speaking of the Barbie movie, a brand-new trailer for the highly anticipated film has been released. In it, Barbie (Robbie) and her boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling) embark on an exciting adventure to learn about what exists outside of Barbie Land aka the real world.

“So this is the real world,” Barbie says in the trailer, and the scene cuts to her and Ken roller skating in bright neon outfits.

Get ready to party with Barbie because the movie premieres in theaters everywhere on July 21, 2023.

As they always say: “Everything happens for a reason.”
