3 Generations Take on a Disney Cruise—Here’s an Honest Review from a Boomer, a Millennial and Gen Alpha

The ultimate family vacation or a recipe for disaster?

Disney Cruise Line

I have a confession to make: I’m a bit of a Disney fanatic. I’ve been to the parks over a dozen times, starting as young as a tiny tot with my most recent trip occurring just last month to celebrate the holidays (Old Hollywood style). I’m also a Disney entertainment junkie, D23 member and wannabe Disney content creator (if only I could master TikTok). But with all this fandom, there was one Disney experience I had yet to check off my bucket list: the infamous Disney cruise.

The Walt Disney Company’s Experiences division (which includes Disney Cruise Line) reportedly brought in a record-high $34.1 billion in topline revenue for 2024, and in 2025, it’s anticipating a 6 to 8 percent growth thanks in part to a flurry of new offerings being added to the cruise division lineup. The company currently has six ships in operation—Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish and Disney Treasure—with two new vessels on the horizon for 2025: Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure.

With all this buzz, I figured it was high time I experienced a Disney cruise myself. So, I gathered some of the biggest Disney fans I know—my boomer mom, my millennial sister and my adorable 6-year-old Gen Alpha nephew—and together, we took on the experience of a lifetime. If you’re considering a similar trip, here’s what you should know before booking.

Our Disney Cruise Ship: The Disney Magic

Our family trip was aboard Disney’s inaugural cruise ship, the Disney Magic. With its initial debut in 1998, the Magic is the oldest vessel in the Disney Cruise Line fleet—but don’t let its advanced age fool you. Thanks to recent upgrades and modernizations, this ship is a favorite amongst Disney diehards and frequent floaters. (While on board, we chatted with multiple fellow cruisers who insisted this ship was their favorite because of its older age. It’s smaller, cheaper and typically less crowded compared to the newer vessels.) Highlights on board include:

  • Three rotational dining experiences (Rapunzel’s Royal Table, Lumiere’s and Animator’s Palate) plus a buffet and tons of quick-service options
  • Broadway-style performances in the Walt Disney Theater, including Tangled: The Musical and Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic
  • Three onboard pools (a family pool, an adults-only pool and a splash pad for 3+) and the AquaDunk waterslide
  • Disney’s Oceaneer Club for kids, including Marvel Super Hero Academy and Andy’s Room
  • Deck parties, character meet-and-greets and fireworks at sea

Disney also offers themed experiences on select cruises to help you get into the seasonal spirit. With a fall departure date, we experienced Halloween on the High Seas, which included tons of special onboard events including trick-or-treating, Mickey’s Mouse-querade party, meet-and-greets with Disney characters in costumes, as well as spooky decorations and specialty treats.

Our Disney Cruise Destination: The Bahamas

Our cruise was a short and sweet three-night trip that departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and sailed to Nassau and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney’s brand-new tropical retreat on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. A stunning escape filled with white-sand beaches, crystal-clear blue water and tons of family-friendly activities; this port of call was a stand-out stop for my whole family.

We loved how the architecture and design of everything from the dining pavilions to the cultural center seemed to be inspired by the island itself, featuring dramatic structures that resembled oversized seashells one could find while walking along the coast. The overall vibe felt like a celebration of Bahamian culture thanks to the family activities and entertainment options (including a local Junkanoo celebration) as well as the permanent art installations that subtly immersed you in the customs and artistry of Eleuthera and its people. It's a far cry from other tropical cruise destinations I've been to before (that, at best, can be described as an overly engineered hunk of sand with a questionably sound waterpark stuck on top). In my opinion, these collaborative efforts and thoughtful details are what set Disney apart from other major cruise lines.

A Multi-Generational Disney Cruise Review

Three generations taking on a Disney cruise (and staying in a single stateroom)? Yep, you better believe we had thoughts.

Q: How are you liking the Disney cruise so far?

A: “This is my first cruise! I’ve actually always been anti-cruise, sorry to say, because I thought it was kind of silly to be stuck on a boat. But when you're stuck on a boat like this…holy Christmas! It's amazing. And for me, it's just the right size. I actually don't think I'd like anything bigger. It's perfect. It's still gigantic, and an absolute engineering marvel. Even though it was built in the late ‘90s or thereabouts. And it's just amazing really. I have lots of questions about the radar and the funny little ball things in the front of the boat. Is there a number I can call to ask?”

“[Plus,] the crew can't do enough for you. They are all so happy and positive, and they're just so Disney-oriented. It just makes you feel happy. Yesterday we had lots of time to walk around, and they explained everything. We had a great dinner at Rapunzel's Royal table, and we saw the most phenomenal play [Tangled: The Musical]. I mean, some of those people should be on Broadway. They're just amazing, and it was such a beautiful production. And the stateroom is fairly spacious. There's four of us in here and we're not bouncing off each other. It's great.”

Q: Is a Disney cruise a good family trip for multiple generations?

A: “I think it's a fantastic family trip because everything that you could want to do is here in one place. I think it's a very safe environment for kids, and it's fun and enjoyable for all three of our generations. I mean, personally, I'm a kid at heart, but that's beside the point. Nonetheless, it's just so wonderful being here with my two girls and my grandson. It's the best.”

The Meticulous Millennial Mom

Q: How would you describe yourself as a mom?

A: “I'm a fun, cool mom. I like to enjoy a drink here and there, and the drinks on the cruise were delicious. But for $17 [each], it might not have been worth it, and I'm now going to owe my sister $34.”

Q: Is a Disney cruise a good family trip for multiple generations?

A: “I think it's a great cruise for three generations. The stateroom is spacious if your group is two adults and two kids, but if you’re traveling with more and you’re able to afford it, I suggest splurging on two rooms, as the pull-out sofa is not the most comfortable and, unfortunately, the bunk bed only reaches 220 pounds and should really only be used for a child. I also wish the top bunk safety bar was longer and a bit sturdier. I love that we have a balcony though. You definitely need a balcony if you’re claustrophobic and don’t like to be stuck indoors. It's worth the extra splurge. It's also nice waking up and being able to see the ocean. It's the most relaxing way to wake up in the morning.”

Q: What about the meals?

A: “The food has been amazing and has been accommodating to all types of diets. There’s Halal food, kosher food, food for vegetarians and vegans. Oh, and allergies. Disney is very conscious of food allergies.”

Q: How so?

"For one thing, we had the same serving staff the whole time for our sit-down meals, so we didn't need to explain our group's allergies over and over again. Each restaurant also had special allergy menus with logos next to each allergen-free food, so you can relax knowing everything on the menu has already been vetted. That was a huge relief as a mom. I also thought the allergen-free food options were great. It didn't feel like we were missing out on a ton compared to the normal menu. Just be mindful of the buffet in case your little one can't read yet or can be a bit impulsive—I suggest parents go with young kids if they have specific food allergies.”

Q: Any can’t-miss dishes?

A: "I personally loved the food and entertainment at Animator's Palate. The black truffle pasta purseittes was my favorite appetizer of the whole trip, and, I don't want to give anything away, but the meal ends with a surprise appearance by one very famous sorcerer. For dessert, the Grand Marnier souffle at Lumiere's was an absolute standout. I also loved their crispy roasted duck breast entree and Gaston's escargot gratinée as an appetizer, incredible. And it wouldn't be a Disney cruise without their famous chicken tenders, which you can grab at the buffet and a few quick-service spots. My son would argue his favorite food on board was the unlimited soft-serve ice cream, so take that as you will. Oh, and if you want an insider tip: On the last day of your cruise, the buffet will offer Mickey Mouse CHURRO WAFFLES which are absolutely divine."

Q: What about the entertainment? Is it engaging for all ages or should parents plan on napping through it?

A: “I enjoyed the on-board entertainment. The theater show [Tangled: The Musical] was so well done. I liked that they incorporated the movie with the show. It honestly felt like a Broadway play, it was that fantastic. My antsy 6-year-old sat through the whole thing without a peep and wouldn't stop talking about how awesome it was days later."

Q: Any other features you liked or didn’t like?

A: “Oh, I also love that when you wake up in the morning, channel one has a replay of the cruise director telling you what's going to happen for the day. So today, we’re going to explore the island of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and then tonight we get to go trick-or-treating with Mickey Mouse and friends. How fun!”

Q: How are you liking the Disney cruise so far?

A: “It’s so good. We got to watch the movie Ratatouille while at the pool and then went to the jewelry store and I got a special charm for free that's real gold. It was so good, and I loved it, and it was so cool. And I have it in my pocket right now. Today is the second day on the cruise, so I'm going to get my bracelet now. I loved my pasta dinner last night and the [Tangled: The Musical] show. My favorite characters were Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. I liked those two only.

“Mama also got me a gift, I got Stitch! He’s on the bunk bed with me now. Tomorrow, we get off the cruise [to go to the island Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point] and I’m going to swim in the nice warm water and play in the sand.”

Q: Do you think a Disney cruise is fun for kids?

A: “It’s a blast for kids! Remember what they said on the TV? ‘We’re gonna have a blast,’ they were right.”

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

What We Like

  • The overall size of the Disney Magic ship
  • The buffet and sit-down dining experiences
  • The island day at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
  • The Halloween theming and special events (deck parties and fireworks at sea)
  • The on-board entertainment (theatrical performances and character meet-and-greets)
  • The phenomenal staff

What We Don't Like

  • The stateroom was a bit outdated and small for three adults and one kid
  • Crowded pools
  • Disney Magic is an older ship, so there aren't as many flashy amenities or modern updates

Boomer: “For someone who has always viewed cruises with skepticism, my experience on the Disney Magic was wonderful. The ship was just the right size, the staff made us feel welcome the instant we boarded and in true to Disney fashion, the Halloween theme was well done throughout the ship. The accommodations were very nice and efficiently designed. I especially appreciated all the preplanned options for activities. We didn’t have to think about what to do next, we only needed to figure out how to get there. The themed dinners were amazing experiences with excellent food and entertainment and careful accommodations for anyone with food allergies. The beach day at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point was fun, too! All in all, it was a delightful trip. The most memorable part for me, though, was sharing it with my daughters and grandson.”

Millennial: “The ship was luxurious, yet small enough to enjoy and easily explore. The dining experiences were so fun and interactive, my favorite was Animator’s Palate. The crew on the ship were so welcoming and accommodating to us as well, from beginning to end!”

Gen Alpha: “I liked the food, the Disney characters and the dining experience. I liked swimming in the pool and the unlimited ice cream when my mom allowed it. My favorite was the strawberry vanilla twist! The games on the top deck were fun to play. I played so much ping pong and foosball.”
