Our prediction was correct: It’s As Ever launch day—and Meghan Markle’s first product drop (jam included) has already fully sold out. But there’s more to come, according to the website, and the Duchess of Sussex herself shared a video on Instagram that highlighted more recipe testing, including a dessert that’s Princess Lilibet-inspired.

The best recipes are the ones that get passed down

All the details about how to make the dish—called Chantilly Lili—are shared in a piece published this morning in the New York Times. The dessert is a riff on a banana pudding made by Meghan’s grandmother, Jeanette, who she spent quite a bit of time with growing up, per the piece. The connection to Lili? Mainly, the name, although Meghan captioned her video with one additional detail about the tie: “A delicious dessert named after our darling daughter. So so so good. As special and sweet as she is,” she wrote. Still, that’s not stopping the tiny connection to Prince Harry & Meghan’s daughter from making headlines across the globe.

Perhaps more interesting is the recipe itself, which updates the Southern classic—typically layered with cookies and sliced banana—to add strawberries that have been macerated with lemon. The final flourish is passionfruit seeds, plucked from the Duchess of Sussex’s Montecito-based garden. Even though the recipe, beloved by Meghan’s grandmother, is given a makeover, the duchess is clear: “...she would have loved this,” Meghan tells the Times.

Meghan’s own mother, Doria Ragland, is the only one who appears to be skeptical of her daughter’s variation to the original dessert at first. In a taste test of Chantilly Lili, she appears to hold back praise until the second bite. The interaction between mother and daughter is charming—especially when Meghan looks a hair panicked that her mom might not like it before ultimately getting her approval.
Back to Lili: The dessert is a fun way to include the Duchess of Sussex’s three-year-old daughter (who happens to be seventh in line to the British throne) in her culinary efforts. After all, Lili and her five-year-old brother Archie are certainly helpers in the garden and kitchen, as made clear on Meghan’s personal Instagram account in the lead-up to the As Ever launch.
More than anything, we love the family history of this Lili-inspired dish.
