Duchess Sophie is one of the most underrated royals, in my humble opinion. Not only is she following in Queen Elizabeth’s footsteps with her brand-new role, but she is also willing to break protocol on occasion.
For her latest outing, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 60, made a solo visit to Warcop Training Centre in Cumbria. Photographers captured a stunning portrait of the royal standing alone in a field and wearing a military uniform.
In the picture, Duchess Sophie has a huge smile on her face as she looks off in the distance. The photo is followed by candid shots of the royal interacting with members of the Armed Forces.
The caption included details about the duchess’s visit: “As Royal Colonel of The Queen’s Own Yeomanry, The Duchess has visited troops based at Warcop Training Centre in Cumbria. After watching a training exercise, Her Royal Highness had the opportunity to meet and speak to reservists of the Regiment and learnt more about their work.”
It also explained Duchess Sophie’s involvement as Royal Colonel of The Queen’s Own Yeomanry. “Created in 1971, The Queen’s Own Yeomanry is a light cavalry regiment in the Army Reserve,” the caption continued. “Its role involves operating in front of other forces to gather intelligence on the enemy and the environment.”
Last week, the royal family announced that Duchess Sophie has been named patron of the Mothers’ Union. The duchess will follow in the footsteps of the late Queen Elizabeth (who previously held the position), along with the Queen Mother and Queen Victoria.
