Ready for another slice of Spencer family history?
Charles Spencer, 59, who you might know as Princess Diana’s younger brother, has just offered up another vintage photo featuring his ancestors. The snap sees Charles’s father, Edward John Spencer, being walked to school by the author's grandmother, Cynthia. But while Charles (being the historian that he is) loves digging up old family photos, there seems to be a deeper meaning to this particular choice.
“My grandmother, Cynthia Spencer, accompanying my father at @eton.college in the late 1930s,” the 9th Earl Spencer wrote in his caption.
Seems like the earl is just taking another walk down memory lane, no? Well, in case you're unaware, Charles announced a brand-new bombshell memoir last week, titled A Very Private School, which will focus on the years when he attended Eton College.
A writeup about the memoir from Gallery Books reads: “A Very Private School offers a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Charles Spencer attended in his youth and provides important insights into an antiquated boarding system. Exploring the long-lasting impact of his experiences, Spencer presents a candid reckoning with his past and a reclamation of his childhood.”
We'd argue that it's no coincidence Charles chose to share this photo right as he announced his new memoir, which hits shelves on March 24, 2024. With Eton on the mind, perhaps the 9th Earl Spencer was wondering about his father's experiences at the boarding school.
Meanwhile, Charles might also be thinking about his great-nephew, Prince George. The eldest son of Prince William and Princess Catherine visited Eton College this past June, and it is speculated that once the 10-year-old turns 13, he may attend the same school where his father and uncle, Prince Harry, were also students.
They could make a whole season of The Crown simply out of one of the photos you’ve shared, Charles.
