In the caption, Spencer shared details about the photo, writing, “Riding in the Park at @althorphouse in the summer of 1909—my great-aunt Delia - sidesaddle - (on ‘Ithaca’), and my great-uncle Cecil Spencer (on ‘Cooper’).”
He also shared personal memories about his great-aunt and great-uncle. “I remember Aunt Delia well: by that stage she was small, and bent over by age, but she had a strong character,” he continued. “She was a gifted musician. Cecil I never met—after many heroics as a motor torpedo boat captain in World War 1, he died as a young man after being thrown from his horse, after a polo match on Malta.”
Although Spencer never met his great-uncle, they do have one thing in common. “He and I share a birthday (20 May)—as does one of my own great-nephews, in fact,” he added. “Anyway, a happy shot from a seemingly more innocent age.”
This isn’t the first time that Spencer has posted family photos on social media. Earlier this month, he shared a grainy black-and-white snap of his late grandfather, Jack, and his Aunt Delia.
