There’s a funny thing that happens in New York during wintertime: One day, everyone’s breezing through the parks wearing slim camel trenches, and the next, people are buttoned up in puffer coats, darting toward the subway like the next Great Appalachian Storm is upon us. Nevertheless, colder temps are here—and whether you live in the Northeast or are rolling your (icicle-filled) eyelashes from somewhere in the Midwest—I share a mutual interest: the desire to curl up in a warm, cozy blanket. Picture thick, puffy duvets and electric/heated numbers to cult-classic throws like Jenni Kayne's Alpaca Basketweave and Barefoot Dreams’ CozyChic blanket.

So below, I had PureWow editors test some of the warmest, coziest blankets to stock up on this winter. (And head to the bottom of this article for a breakdown of the warmest blanket types and materials, according to a sleep doctor and textile expert.)

How We Tested the Warmest Blankets

After scouring the web for the warmest blankets I could find, I had PureWow editors test the top 10 options that were best for winter (think: sherpa, faux fur, fleece and electric). Across the board, I made sure each one: a) was made of comforting materials, like wool, fleece or sherpa/faux fur, b) possessed above-average insulation, weight or electric warming properties, c) was durable enough to withstand frequent use and d) easy to clean.

Best Blanket Overall

1. Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Throw Blanket

What We Love

  • Stretchy CozyChic knit™  fabric
  • Machine-washable
  • Shrink-, pill- and wrinkle-resistant

What We Don't Love

  • One size

Barefoot Dreams

The one celebrity-approved blanket I’m seeing *everywhere* right now? This CozyChic throw from Barefoot Dreams. It has A-listers raving, including Chrissy Teigen, Khloé Kardashian, Hailey Bieber and Kate Hudson—so of course, we had to test it out for ourselves. According to Senior Editor Dana Dickey’s PureWow100 review, “Because the knit isn’t open weave, it doesn’t seem to fray or catch on buttons or doorknobs like some blankets…unlike throws I’d picked up at HomeGoods or been gifted myself, the Barefoot Dreams blanket was generously proportioned, at 54 inches by 72 inches. And its knit fabrication has just enough give to seem like it’s hugging you.” To that end, what really makes the blanket unique is its construction. It's crafted with a ribbed, polyester material that feels like butter on the skin—and it stretches out to 6 feet long. It’s also worth mentioning that the blanket is machine-washable and shrink-, pill- and wrinkle-free—so it will keep its softness whether it's brand new or 500 washes in. “I never thought I'd be so obsessed with a blanket, but somehow I am,” backs Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. “It's soft, warm and stretchy, while still being incredibly lightweight.…100 percent worth the crazy price tag.”

2. Cozy Earth Cuddle Blanket

What We Love

  • Unbelievably soft faux fur
  • Heavy like a weighted blanket
  • Two size options
  • Durable and machine washable—no shedding

What We Don't Love

  • Website doesn’t list the weight
  • Too dense for warmer months

Cozy Earth

When I first unpacked this blanket, I thought it was doubled over—it’s that plush. Thanks to a longer, ultra-plush pile that’s unbelievably soft to the touch, it has a thick faux fur texture that looks just as luxe as the real deal. (So much so that I can’t tell the difference between the blanket’s fur and that of my fluffy Sheepadoodle’s.) Plus, while the website doesn’t list the weight, I’d say it’s easily 10 pounds, maybe even 15 (yes, it’s HEAVY). It feels substantial, like it’s giving you a bear hug every time you drape it over your shoulders. But in the best way. It comes in two sizes: classic (60" x 50") or oversized (80" x 60"), for when you need extra room to get cozy—and features warm, rich colorways, like walnut and burgundy, along with neutral shades, including creme and dove grey. Bonus: It also holds up after frequent washing—I just toss it in on a cold, gentle cycle, and tumble dry low. No shedding, no pilling, just the same indulgent feel with vibrant colorfastness.

3. Koolaburra by UGG Crystelle Faux Fur Throw

What We Love

  • Reversible faux fur and micromink
  • Ultra-soft hand
  • Machine washable
  • Subtle modern geo pattern

What We Don't Love

  • Slightly smaller than other throws

Kohls

With a reversible faux fur exterior and a subtle geo pattern that gives it a modern edge, this UGG blanket is a winter essential. (And at $40 a pop, you might as well grab two). Its 50” x 70” size is big enough to wrap yourself in, and according to PureWow Senior Commerce Editor, Stephanie Maida, “It has a fuzzy faux fur exterior and what the brand calls a ‘micromink’ reverse, which is the side that touches your skin…[both] are *so* soft and luxurious-feeling. I bought on a whim last winter and have wrapped up in practically every night since.” Not to mention that it’s as practical as it is plush: “I was worried about washing it the first time for fear of it losing its softness, but I've since thrown it in the wash multiple times and it hasn't lost an ounce of it, nor has it pilled or shed,” Maida adds.

4. Jenni Kayne Alpaca Basketweave Throw

What We Love

  • Alpaca- and wool-blended fabric
  • Plush instead of scratchy
  • Fringe holds up over time
  • Easy to spot-clean

What We Don't Love

  • Dry clean only

Jenni Kayne

My first thought when I laid my hands on this (not so-insignificant) splurge? This blanket is most definitely worth its $300 price tag. The 50” x 70” throw is made from a quality blend of alpaca and merino wool, and its handwoven, basketweave construction offers a Goldilocks level of warmth—not so thin that you’re still itching for a sweater, but not so thick that you start sweating immediately. More importantly, I was surprised by just how smoothly the alpaca wool glides on the skin. It doesn’t have the scratchy feel I’d typically expect from a high-end wool—and it’s so soft, in fact, that I’d compare it to a smooth sherpa or fleece. Not only has it held up with daily use in my apartment—whether draped over the sofa in the living room or used as an extra layer over my coverlet—but the elegant fringe has also managed to keep its shape without getting tatty. (It’s also easy to spot clean: Stains lift with just a damp cloth). And of course, everyone—including me—is obsessed with this blanket’s earthy neutral color options. I have the cocoa hue (though it’s also available in ivory, light grey, oatmeal and charcoal) and it’s totally on point with this year’s New England Eclectic trend

Best Sherpa Blanket

5. Pottery Barn Alpine Cable Sherpa Throw

What We Love

  • Reversible hand-knit cable and sherpa design
  • Chunky front, plush back
  • Heavyweight for cold nights
  • Machine-washable

What We Don't Love

  • Can feel a bit heavy for year-round use

Pottery Barn

With one side featuring a hand-knit cable pattern and the other lined with plush sherpa, this blanket is a combo platter of cozy chic. It features 100 percent acrylic on the front for a chunky, textured knit while the backside is fit with polyester sherpa for that ultra-soft, fleece-like feel. More to the point: It’s heavy, dense and seriously plush—ideal for layering on the bed or taking with you to the couch. “My grandpa gifted me this blanket knowing that it's my first winter in the city,” says PureWow Associate Fashion Commerce Editor Stephanie Meraz. “It’s been my favorite blanket I’ve ever owned. It’s extremely heavy, and I love how one side is hand-knit cable and the other sherpa—it’s the best of both worlds.” And at 50" x 60", it’s the right size for a cozy night in, whether you’re draping it at the foot of your bed (like Meraz does) or keeping it close on the couch for movie marathons.

Best Faux Fur Blanket

6. UnHide The Marshmallow 2.0 Faux Fur Throw Blanket

What We Love

  • Recycled polyester faux fur fabric
  • 9.5-pound weight
  • Machine-washable
  • Sustainable and cruelty-free

What We Don't Love

  • More of a weighted blanket than a throw

UnHide

This throw from UnHide—which is a sustainable lifestyle brand that uses almost entirely recycled materials—is totally unique, buttery soft, and made entirely from vegan faux fur (which feels just like chinchilla, per the website). The Marshmallow 2.0 is its most popular blanket, and aside from its ultra-plush feel and 100 percent cruelty-free materials, people love it for its thick, nine-pound weight and oversized, 60” x 80” dimensions. “This is my favorite throw blanket ever,” PureWow Director of Affiliate Strategy Pam Masin says. “It’s obviously soft, but it’s also a pretty substantial weight for a throw blanket. I like it better than a weighted blanket (it’s not constricting or heavy necessarily), but still has that all-wrapped-up/therapeutic thing going on. I had no idea it was made of 90 percent recycled materials…” Add to that the fact that it’s machine-washable (cool water on a high spin with detergent only), and many reviewers have lauded the material for withstanding stains from pets and kids.

Fast Facts

  • Material: recycled polyester and polyester faux fur
  • Size: 60” x 80”

Best Wool Blanket

7. Brooklinen Striped Lambswool Throw Blanket

What We Love

  • Made from 100 percent lambswool
  • Handcrafted in Germany with quality yarns
  • Smooth on skin
  • Sophisticated stripes

What We Don't Love

  • Spot-clean only

Brooklinen

This throw is handcrafted in Germany by a family-run mill (100+ years of experience there), so you can also feel the quality from the moment you touch it. The lambswool offers a perfect mix of softness and structure, while the raw, fringed edges add a laid-back vibe that makes it seem like you casually tossed it over your couch. Take it from PureWow Associate Sales and Deals Editor, Destinee Scott, who says: “I was recently gifted this Brooklinen throw, and it’s doing everything I need it to. It looks good at the end of my bed, it feels good on my skin, and it’s a good size.” At 51" x 75", it’s not too big that it takes over the room, though definitely big enough to wrap yourself in on chilly nights. With its subtle stripes and neutral tones, it fits into practically any decor without trying too hard.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 100 percent lambswool
  • Size: 51" x 75"

Best Electric Blanket

8. Westinghouse Electric Blanket

What We Love

  • 10 heat settings with a built-in auto-off feature
  • Smooth double-layered flannel
  • Machine-washable
  • Multiple sizes available

What We Don't Love

  • Can electrocute you forget to unplug before washing

Westing House

If you're someone who feels eternally cold (even when the heat’s cranked up), this electric blanket might be your new best friend. It’s made from super-smooth, double-layered flannel that feels like a second skin, and it comes with 10 heat settings for you to find the perfect temp. PureWow’s Former Senior Food Editor, Katherine Gillen raved: “I love a heated blanket, it's come in handy many times (the college roommate who would turn the thermostat off in January, the time the boiler in my apartment building broke). It’s like having a heating pad for your whole body and honestly, nothing makes me fall asleep faster.” It’s available in multiple sizes—including a throw (50" x 60"), twin (62" x 84"), queen (84" x 90") or king (100" x 90") —and the intelligent design features a 1-12 hour auto-off with overheat protection. Better yet, it’s easy to clean—just unplug the cord, throw it in the washing machine and you’re good to go.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 220 GSM flannel
  • Size: Throw (50" x 60"), Twin (62" x 84"), Full (80" x 84"), Queen (84" x 90"), King (100" x 90")

Best Weighted Blanket

9. Bearaby Queen Weighted Blanket

What We Love

  • No pellet filling; weight stays evenly distributed
  • Doubles as a duvet cover for a queen-sized bed
  • Two material options
  • Doesn’t trap heat

What We Don't Love

  • Material isn’t plush like sherpa

Bearaby

This number—which scored 91 points out of 100 in a PureWow100 review—solves two of the biggest gripes people tend to have with weighted blankets: it’s not filled with pellets, so there’s no frustrating redistribution of weight, and it’s large enough to comfortably cover a queen-sized bed. Available in two material options, you can choose between the Ocean Hugger (20 pounds, made from upcycled ocean-bound plastic) or the Cotton Hugger (30 pounds, crafted from organic cotton). Both have a soft, chunky knit texture that’s not only breathable but also adds a cozy aesthetic to any bedroom. Take it from PureWow VP of Editorial, Candace Davison, who shares that, despite her initial skepticism about feeling "adult swaddled" in a 35-pound blanket, the weight is perfectly balanced, cocooning her without feeling suffocated. “It’s like having just enough pressure to help me sink into bed,” she explains, adding that it’s genuinely improved her sleep and reduced tossing and turning. Plus, while the blanket might be an investment at $279+, Davison argues its dual function is worth the splurge: “It’s designed to replace your standard duvet cover, and after trying it out for a few days, I’m ready to replace my quilt for good. And I’m not even a weighted blanket person. At all.”

Fast Facts

  • Material: Organic cotton (30 lbs) or upcycled polyester from ocean-bound plastic (20 lbs)
  • Size: 60" x 80" (queen-sized)

Most Packable Blanket

10. Demdaco Navy Giving Blanket

What We Love

  • Super soft for daily use
  • Compact and easy to store
  • Machine-washable
  • Makes a great gift

What We Don't Love

  • One size and color option

Demdaco

Finally, a blanket made from ultra-soft polyester that’s as cozy as a cardigan. At 52” x 62”, it’s perfectly sized to wrap around yourself while reading—or even on the go, as PureWow Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu shares: “I’ve had this blanket for a few years—so soft! So fuzzy! So cozy! And the best part is that it doesn’t take up a ton of space. It folds up so neatly under the coffee table; it’s easy to store in the off-season.” Plus, it's machine washable: just toss it in on cold, tumble dry low, and it’ll stay plush and huggable with frequent use. It’s the kind of blanket you’ll keep reaching for—whether you’re snuggling on the couch or packing it for a weekend trip—and the compact size makes it easy to store. (It also comes packaged with a sweet, heartfelt message, so it’s a great gift for someone who needs a little TLC.)

The Bottom Line: What Are the Warmest Blankets

I’ve got three top recommendations for you. If you're looking for ultimate warmth, the Cozy Earth Cuddle Blanket tops the list, thanks to its thick pile faux fur that feels like a cozy bear hug. It's ideal for anyone who want the comfort of a weighted blanket with the feel of a furry pet. And if you’re in the market for something ultra-soft, the CozyChic Throw from Barefoot Dreams is a celebrity favorite—think Khloé Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen—and it's perfect for anyone who wants plush, cloud-like comfort that’s still lightweight. Lastly, the Pottery Barn Alpine Cable Sherpa Throw brings weight and texture with a hand-knit cable pattern and sherpa reverse, making it a great choice for cold sleepers who want that heavy, cocooned feeling on chilly nights.

What to Look for When Shopping for a Warm Blanket

  • Wool and Fleece: “Wool fabrics are warm because they have low heat conductivity, which makes them suitable for cold weather. They are water-repellent as well and are highly absorbent—wool fibers can soak up to 20 percent of their weight in water before leaking. However, wool has poor dimensional stability; hence it shrinks easily under mechanical action, friction or pressure. Also, prolonged exposure to UV radiation tends to discolor the fabric,” Onuoha explains. “While wool can be a bit itchy, fleece is not and has a softer feel. However, fleece is lighter in weight than wool and does not insulate when it is wet…wool is capable of insulating even when wet.” She also adds: “Fleece, on its own, is resistant to water and moisture because of the combination of polyester. This property makes it easy to dry out after washing the fabrics and is also ideal for extreme weather conditions. It is also breathable and wrinkle resistant.”
  • Electric and Heated Options: Naturally, if you live in a location where wind chills can reach up to 9.9 miles per hour, you’ll want something ultra-warm. Electric/heated blankets are about as warm as you can get, where they plug into the wall and draw electricity from small, thin wires that run through the fabric. “Electric blankets work best when used sparingly, and lightly,” writes Nectar experts in a blog post. “[Your] body is a good natural source of heat, and [incremental], small steps are always best when using any sort of artificial heating device.” They also warn: “This is a biggie: Most electric blankets come equipped with a timer. It’s important to use it! [Leaving] an electric blanket on can create [serious injury, and you want to] utilize the timer function [to] make sure that you have a safe night’s sleep…You also may be surprised to know that you don’t need much time for an electric blanket to do its job. As little as ten minutes usually is enough to warm a bed.”
  • Down Comforters: “If sleeping underneath a big cloud sounds preferable, a comforter is the way to go,” says Onuoha. “A comforter is the perfect bedding for colder nights, where they are typically stuffed with down or down alternative fill. Since down and its alternatives are excellent heat trappers, comforters are great for a fluffier, warmer sleep experience.” She also adds: “The amount of insulating fill should keep most sleepers warm through the winter.” (Read more about that here.)
  • Quilts: “A quilt comprises three layers; top, batting and bottom. The top layer makes the quilt stand out. With a classic quilt, the top layer includes different pieces of fabric sewn together in a grid or a more complex design. The inside batting is made of materials like wool, down, or polyester making a quilting fill, while the bottom layer is usually a single piece of fabric,” Onuoha says. “People who sleep hot and want something light to provide just a touch of insulation would most likely prefer a quilt. Comforters make sleepers overheat so much—and unlike bulky comforters, quilts fit easily inside most washing machines. Their compact design makes it easy to transport and style them anywhere, from the bedroom to the couch.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sherpa Warmer Than Fleece?

According to Onuoha, “Sherpa fabric is made from synthetic fibers, while fleece is made from natural fibers. Fleece is softer and more insulating than sherpa, making it better for colder weather. Sherpa is better at wicking away moisture, however, making it a good choice for warmer weather.” She also adds: “While both blankets offer warmth and comfort, there are some key differences…Sherpa fabric has a soft, brushed surface that feels similar to wool, while fleece fabric has a smooth surface. Sherpa is also (typically) more expensive than plush fleece. Overall, sherpa is warmer than plush fleece, making it a better choice for cold-weather items.”

Do fleece blankets keep you warm?

Yes. As mentioned above, fleece is a great option for colder weather because of its insulating properties. Per Onuoha, “Fleece has a softer feel and is lighter in weight than wool. It also provides warmth and comfort, making it ideal for colder conditions.” Furthermore, fleece is breathable and resistant to water and moisture due to its polyester composition, so it dries quickly and is suitable for extreme weather conditions. That said, it's important to note that fleece does not insulate as well when wet, unlike wool, which can still maintain warmth even in damp conditions.

What is the coziest type of blanket?

Basically, the coziest type of blanket comes down to materials: faux fur, fleece and chunky knits. Faux fur blankets offer a luxurious, enveloping warmth that feels like a soft hug—perfect for cold nights. Fleece is another favorite, known for its softness and breathability, while still providing excellent insulation. As Onuoha points out, “Fleece has a softer feel and provides warmth and comfort, making it ideal for cozying up during colder weather.” You also have chunky knit blankets, especially weighted ones, that are also top contenders for coziness. In a PureWow100 review, Davison explains how weighted blankets offer “just enough pressure to help you sink into bed,” creating a cocoon-like effect that’s both calming and warm.
