Background: Before PureWow, I worked for a number of high-end, New York-based interior designers. I’ve spent more time (than I care to admit) hemming and hawing with clients—be it over a $5K oriental at ABC Carpet & Home or $3K cowhide at BaBoo. Yet, while there’s no shortage of ways to drop serious cash on a rug, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: price doesn’t always equal luxury. What really makes a rug feel high-end is the construction. Wool, leather, handwoven—these are the buzzwords that matter when you want a rug that looks expensive (without making your wallet weep). Craftsmanship is key—and with the right materials, a budget-friendly rug can look just as magazine-worthy as its counterparts.

So below, I dug into Wayfair’s rug selection to curate a list of my favorite designs (just as I would for clients back in the day). From a Cali-cool oriental that starts at $35 to an antique Joanna Gaines number that’ll run you $74, here are 10 rugs that Architectural Digest designers would approve of.

Right off the bat, this rug transported me back to a boutique hotel I stayed at in Sonoma, CA. Its soft pinks and earthy browns evoke the feel of a wine-country villa, while geometrics and purposeful fading give it a sophisticated yet effortlessly Cali-cool edge. Plus, despite the intricate design, it’s made from durable, stain-resistant polyester with a low 0.13-inch pile height, which makes it perfect for high-traffic areas. The machine-woven technique can hold up in your busiest spaces, and the subtle texture makes it ideal for grounding an open-plan living room or a cozy study. And of course, maintenance is a breeze—just vacuum without a beater bar or spot clean with water.

If you’re on the hunt for a piece that screams quiet luxury, this natural number is it. The rug’s clean, architectural lines and neutral palette elicit a minimalist chicness you'd find in a Soho loft with floor-to-ceiling windows. To that end, what makes it look so expensive is the material. Hand-tufted from 100 percent wool, the natural fibers not only feel plush underfoot, but also give off a slightly muted sheen for an extra rich finish. Not to mention that it has a 0.39-inch pile height that makes it sturdy enough to withstand high-traffic areas like living rooms or bedrooms. Pro tip: To keep it looking its best, avoid using vacuums with beater bars (they can be rough on the fibers) and stick to professional cleaning for spills.

Cowhide rugs are my go-to for creating a high-end look, but they tend to come with a hefty price tag (making this budget-friendly option a game-changer). The craftsmanship—hand-woven using leather in a flatweave technique—offers that rich, tactile texture you’d expect from something that starts at $1K for a two-by-three. The neutral color options (tan/ivory and grey/ivory) also make it versatile enough to fit traditional eclectic and modern Mediterranean aesthetics alike. Better yet, leather is naturally sturdy, so this guy is guaranteed to hold up over time. Just remember, cowhide does require a bit of TLC—I'd recommend professional cleaning to keep it looking its best.

What I love most about this rug is how it mimics the feel of a charming upstate cabin— rustic meets refined. The handwoven, braided weave gives it an artisanal vibe while the geometric pattern leaves it feeling modern and fresh. Plus, thanks to its blend of jute and cotton, the rug is designed to endure spills in the kitchen or dining room. It’s GoodWeave-certified, which means it’s been ethically made, and all it requires is a vacuum without a beater bar to keep it looking good as new. (Spot clean with a dry cloth for spills). Oh, and did I mention that it comes in two colorways (beige/ivory and natural/spice)?

This indoor/outdoor rug could easily be plucked from a recent Architectural Digest feature, where the vibe was all about blending old-world charm with modern functionality. The rug has a Southwestern, tribal-inspired design (which I’m seeing all over Instagram right now), and hits the nail on the head of this year’s New England eclectic trend. Beyond the design, however, (available in four colorways) it’s engineered for outdoor use with blend of polypropylene and polyester. The rug comes with a latex backing for added durability and the weather-, fade- and stain-resistant construction is perfect for patios, sunrooms, entryways—you name it. Even better: All it needs is a quick hose down for easy cleaning.

6. Kelly Clarkson Home Sylvie Rug

Kelly Clarkson Home

This rug is all about modern farmhouse—but in a way that feels updated without the shiplap undertone (meaning it’s Joanna Gaines-approved for 2024). The subtle chevron pattern—which comes in four colorways—circumvents the overly rustic, cliché farmhouse look with warmth and texture. This is thanks to its hand-woven wool and flatweave technique, ensuring it feels every bit as luxurious as it looks. The medium-pile provides a soft, high-end feel while the stain-resistant properties make it practical for high-traffic zones. That said, it’s worth mentioning that it’ll shed a little at first—it typically takes 20-25 vacuums (minimum) to curtail shedding, per the manufacturer.

7. Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines x Loloi Mona Rug

Joanna Gaines Magnolia x Loloi

Speaking of Joanna Gaines rugs: this one from her Magnolia Home x Loloi collection—and could easily be pulled from a dreamy fixer-upper flip in Waco. The framed border and traditional medallions give it that lived-in, “I’ve been here forever” vibe while the muted hues keep it feeling current. It also happens to be power-loomed from polyester, which provides a soft texture underfoot without compromising durability. It’s stain-resistant finish ensures it’ll hold against the chaos of everyday life, and the canvas backing means it won’t slip and slide (especially if you add a rug pad). It also comes in two bespoke color options—and I love how the rug will subtly change its look depending on the time of day and the lighting in your room.

Here, a striped stunner that effortlessly blends modern design with everyday practicality. Its neutral gray and cream tones give off a sleek, minimalist vibe that would feel right at home in an airy Scandinavian living room. The vertical stripes and thick border provide a bold yet understated finish—and the hand-tufted, 100 percent wool construction means it’s just as plush underfoot as it is durable. Not to mention that the three color options (white/grey, white/black and cream/grey) make it easy to match with any of your existing décor. Just be sure to pair it with a rug pad for added stability.

This AllModern number has everything you'd want in a high-end, contemporary piece—trendy yet timeless enough to stay in fashion. Made from 100 percent hand-tufted New Zealand wool, its tone-on-tone geometric adds a subtle, modern edge with a solid hue to keep it grounded. It’s also built with an ultra-durable craftsmanship, making sure it can hold up in the living room or bedroom without pulling. And of course, it has a soft, high-profile pile that feels incredibly plush underfoot—but it's not machine washable, so spot cleaning is key.

With 14 color options—ranging from a rich burnt red to moody eggplant to classic navy—this rug is easy to slip into any room like a glove. The clean, minimalist design lets the color and texture do all the talking, and it’s crafted from plush wool in India for a high-end feel underfoot. Not only that but the hand-looming technique gives it a artisanal touch—making it feel more unique and less mass-produced—and the fringe detail adds just enough visual interest to make a statement. The cherry on top? Wool naturally resists dirt and stains, and a quick spot clean with mild detergent will bring this guy back to life.
