You’ll Never Guess Meghan Markle’s Nostalgic, Go-To Taco Bell Order

Oh, and Mindy Kaling was there?

Any fan of the royals knows Meghan Markle likes to cook. (Hey, former PureWow creator Juliette Moreno even tried her spaghetti alla chitarra recipe firsthand.) In fact, she likes it so much that she demos several dishes on her Netflix lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, earlier this month. While I’m intrigued by the concept, I’m most intrigued by her recent admission of loving fast food—specifically, Taco Bell.

“It was so normal, with microwaveable kid meals that had compartmentalized—do you remember them?” she asked guest Mindy Kaling in a recent episode.

“The Hungry Man meals, and there’s a little, tiny compartment that has apple crumble,” Kaling responded.

“I grew up with that, watching Jeopardy! and having a lot of fast food,” Markle answered. When Kaling asked what her favorite was, she said, “I used to eat a lot of Pollo Loco, Taco Bell—extra hot sauce on the Mexican Pizza—Jack in the Box, because my mom loved their tacos.”

For the uninitiated, Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza is seasoned ground beef and refried beans sandwiched between two crispy, fried flour tortillas, which is then topped with pizza sauce, a three-cheese blend and diced tomatoes. The specialty was born in the mid-80s, initially called the Pizzazz Pizza. It was nixed from the menu in November 2020, but after nearly 200K fans petitioned for its revival, the fast food chain brought it back for good less than two years later.

As a food editor who tasted every Taco Bell sauce, dip and condiment (for journalism, of course), I’m curious which hot sauce she meant. Like Kaling, I’m a fan of Fire, which is the third hottest out of four. It offers complex heat, a thick, silky consistency and notes of garlic and onion. Alternatively, Markle could’ve asked for a side of red sauce, which is sort of like a smoky enchilada sauce and my all-time favorite…but hot sauce packets seem more likely.

Netflix renewed the show for a second season just three days after its premiere. Will she reveal her McDonald’s go-to next? (She seems like a Filet-O-Fish kind of girl to me.)
