Starbucks Has a 'Not-So-Secret' Menu & I Can't Stop Ordering Its Latest Creation

It's like a chocolate-covered cherry...pie?

Butterbeer Frappuccino, Snowflake Lattes, Lavender Hazes—for years, Starbucks fans have used the company's myriad syrups, sauces, milks, coffees, teas and toppings to create their own "secret menu" drinks, and the siren-logoed chain has been taking note. After all, it was the popularity of the Pink Drink that catapulted it to official menu status, and just this Valentine's Day, another fan creation made it to the big leagues for a limited time (the Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Créme Frappuccino, in case you're curious).

Well, now Starbucks is taking a more active role in the armchair barista-ing, with an Instagram Broadcast Channel devoted to sharing the best off-menu creations. Its name? The Not-So-Secret Menu.

You'll have to follow the brand to join the channel, where you'll receive updates via the app's messages. Once you've joined, you'll find the latest riffs on its launches, including the one that stopped me in my tracks: an Iced Mocha with Cherry Cold Foam and Cherry Crunch Topping.

I was hesitant, as I worried that anything cherry-flavored would have a syrupy, medicinal quality to it. Thankfully, that is not the case here. The drink is essentially an iced mocha latte, topped with cherry-infused cold foam—a frothy, milk-based layer atop the drink that has more of a strawberries and cream vibe, thanks to its notes of vanilla and cherry. The foam uses cherry powder, according to its nutrition information, which may be why it tastes more like fresh cherries than a dose of NyQuil. (It was originally launched as part of the limited-edition Iced Cherry Chai, but you can add the cold foam and topping to other drinks.)

It blends beautifully with the rich-yet-not-so-sweet mocha flavor, tasting almost like a liquid chocolate-covered cherry. It's a serious treat, but arguably, the best part is the Cherry Crunch topping. Made up of crushed cookie bits, it adds a nice crunch—almost like a streusel on a cherry pie.

As you sip, you find yourself enjoying a full range of desserts, like you're Violet Beauregarde, minus the whole turning-into-a-blueberry bit.

After ten years covering Starbucks, I tend to cringe at the latest secret menu trend—they're often way too much for my tastes—but I was pleasantly surprised here. So much so, that it may become my new "little treat" for those moments when I rationalize that I deserve—nay, need—one (aka every other day around 3 p.m.).

How to Order the Iced Mocha with Cherry Cold Foam & Cherry Crunch

To order it, ask for an iced caffé mocha, omit the whipped cream, and add cherry cold foam and the Cherry Crunch topping (all of which you can do via the app, if you want to order ahead). The foam starts to melt into the drink rather quickly, so dig in as soon as it's ready. You won't be disappointed.
