Right up near the top of the list of most classic footwear, just below black pumps and white sneakers, sits the humble loafer. This preppy shoe is so versatile, never goes out of style and, as this list proves, can be among the comfiest shoes in your collection. But finding the most comfortable women’s loafers can be tricky: One pair pinches, the other pair rubs and so on. So decided to do the heavy lifting for you, compiling a list of the best styles for any budget or size, so you can skip the hard stuff and get straight to sporting your best Rory Gilmore-inspired outfits.

How did I manage to narrow down the list, you ask? Here, you’ll find ten pairs of sleek and chic loafers these women have worn commuting through New York City, exploring museums on vacation, for dinner dates, park walks and chasing their toddles through the playground.

How I Chose the Most Comfortable Loafers

I started by asking PureWow editors for their recommendations. What are the loafers they reach for time and time again that are comfortable enough to stroll around NYC all day long? I then followed that up by reading countless reviews, paying special attention to mentions of comfort, break-in periods, arch support, traction and width. The result? A comprehensive list of the most comfortable loafers the PureWow team has ever worn.

Most Comfortable Loafers Overall

1. G.H. Bass Lianna Super Lug Weejuns

What I Like

  • cushioned insole
  • chunky sole adds some height

What I Don’t Like

  • high price point
  • a little heavy

G.H. Bass

We can’t talk about loafers without mentioning G.H. Bass. The brand has been around since 1876 and makes some of the best loafers on the market. And while I love most Bass styles, the Weejuns in particular are the perfection combination of fashion and function. The insole is nice and cushiony, and the horse bit detail adds some fun without being too much. Plus that lug sole adds a bit of height to your frame without sacrificing comfort. “I love the chunky sole and they're really cushioned and comfortable—I can walk around all day in these babies without worrying about blisters,” says Wellness Director Sarah Stiefvater.

2. Reformation Agathea Chunky Loafers

What I Like

  • sustainably and ethically produced
  • Taylor Swift-approved

What I Don’t Like

  • require some break-in period
  • high price point

Reformation

Looks like Taylor Swift and I both approve of these sustainably and ethically made loafers from Reformation. They have an exaggerated lug sole that offers plenty of traction and just a little bit of extra height and I love the classic penny loafer detailing at the front. They come in a range of chic neutral hues, all of which are made with heritage leather that’s wonderfully durable and ages beautifully, but does require some breaking in. They also run a smidge large, so I recommend going down a half size from your usual.

3. LifeStride London Loafers

What I Like

  • under $100
  • no break-in time required

What I Don’t Like

  • reportedly run a little narrow

LifeStride

This classic loafer has a supremely cushy footbed that feels like a dream every time you slip these beauties on. They’re definitely a staple in my wardrobe, and I’ve even been eying multiple colors to add to my existing black pair. I needed no break-in time, which is very rare for me. The lush footbed is made with Soft System cushioning to support your feet from all angles, and the lug sole gives you ample traction so you can run around town stress free.

What I Like

  • fits true-to-size
  • cushy footbed
  • sleek silhouette

What I Don’t Like

Birdies

There are so many pairs of shoes from Birdies I adore—whether it’s the classic Starling slip-ons ($110) or the new voter-themed Lefty’s Right Mind flats ($195)—but there’s no denying just how fabulous the Blackbird loafers are. And I’m not the only one, Senior Director of Special Projects and Royals Rachel Bowie is also a fan. “I wore them to walk nearly 20,000 steps around NYC and got zero blisters—a major win,” she touts. A nod to the fashion aesthetic of the 90s (but also a loafer style beloved by the late Princess Diana), the Blackbird puts a modern twist on a timeless silhouette. It features a wide band across the top and also comes in three luxe and fade-resistant hues, all of which also feature the brand’s signature seven-layer, quilted footbed.

What I Like

  • lots of color options
  • available in wide widths
  • flexible upper

What I Don’t Like

Vionic

Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay cannot heap enough praise on these super-comfortable loafers. “God bless built-in arch support!” she raves. “The Uptown Penny Loafer from Vionic is so comfortable, it’s one of the only non-sneaker shoes I can bear for a full day on my feet. The toe box is roomy and I’ve never had problems with blisters or irritation, especially around the heel. Also the uppers are flexible and can easily compress making them so easy to travel with.” In fact, the leather upper is specifically designed to be smooshed down to more compactly fit in your suitcase without causing damage to the shoe. Plus, they come in more than 12 different colors, so you can pick up multiple pairs to go with anything and everything in your wardrobe.

Gucci

“The Gucci 1953 Horsebit loafer is *the* classic to wear for years and years and years,” says Senior Editor Dana Dickey. And she’s right, this timeless design has been going strong for decades with absolutely no signs of slowing down. “It has a roomy toe box that really gives your feet room and allows you to wear them with socks,” says Dickey. The leather is incredibly supple and will only look better and feel softer the more you wear them. Yes, they are very expensive, but Dickey says they’re worth the investment if you wear loafers regularly and that they last for years, bringing down the cost per wear.

Most Splurge-Worthy Comfortable Loafers

7. Ferragamo Maryan Gancini Leather Loafers

What I Like

  • age very well
  • sleek silhouette

What I Don’t Like

  • high price point

Ferragamo

“I know they’re a splurge, but these loafers require zero break-in period, the leather is unbelievably soft and they elevate every outfit I pair them with,” says Stiefvater, who happened to snag her pair at an outlet. “I’ve owned them for five-plus years (with very frequent wear) and they still look good as new.” Dickey has also owned a pair of Ferragamo Maryan loafers for years and although she’s taken them in to be re-soled a few times, the uppers are still looking totally gorgeous. All three of us agree the subtle brand detailing make these a fabulous designer pair that doesn’t scream designer (Shiv Roy would definitely approve). Some reviewers say they find these loafers run a little big, but Stiefvater and Dickey say they fit true to size, so unless you have a narrow foot, I recommend sticking with your usual shoe size when ordering.

8. Margaux The Penny Loafers

What I Like

  • suede is hard to keep clean

Margaux

I feel luxurious and fancy just looking at these loafers. They’re made of a high-quality Italian suede and have a contoured fit to hug your foot just right. Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu reports, “They were made for city girls, aka they’re great for walking in. My collection of Margaux shoes is growing shamefully. Cushioned, supportive footbed, beautiful styles and materials—really timeless.” Wu and other reviewers say these loafers fit true to size, and they’re also available in three different widths, although not every color comes in narrow and wide.

There’s the gorgeous moss green above, as well as trendy bright red, two-tone black and white and tweed, just to name a few. Of course, they aren’t just stylish, they’re also incredibly comfortable according to Assistant Commerce Editor Natalie LaBarbera. “They have such a nice cushy footbed that makes them great for wearing all day long,” she says. “And that standout gold hardware is the perfect finishing touch.”

They are inexpensive, come in tons of colors and basically feel like slipper.” What more could a gal ask for? The minimalist design looks incredibly chic on and pairs beautifully with both jeans and midi skirts. Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Look for in a Comfortable Loafer?

Expert stylist Ashlyn Greer recommends looking for loafers with padded insoles and pairs that are made with sturdy material that will last over time. Because loafers are such a versatile shoe, they should be quite durable and stand up well to frequent wear.

Is It Normal for Loafers to Hurt?

Because loafers are usually made to withstand frequent use they’re often made from thicker, tougher materials. As such they can sometime feel uncomfortable at first and require some breaking in. “Soft leather loafers are your best bet for a style that’s easy to break in” advises Greer. “Some synthetics (and more structured/tough leathers) can be harder to break in and can cause more blisters than some of us are comfortable with!” Looking for even more comfort right off the bat? Greer has one more tip: “[Check] in the inside sole where the shoe meets the inside part of the foot. Some loafers have built-in cushion beds there to help with rubbing, and most online product shots show this part of the shoe too.”

How Should I Break In My Loafers?

According to Greer, the best tip for breaking in loafers and avoiding discomfort is making sure ’re getting the right size. “A lot of blisters and rubbing with shoes are actually caused from a shoe that’s too tight or too big, causing more friction than necessary either way,” she says. Some break-in time for stiffer shoes like leather loafers is totally normal, but there are some tricks to speeding up the process. Try wearing your loafers with thick socks to walk around the house before you venture outside. You can take your new pair to a shoe repair stores, where the pros will stretch them out for that lived-in feel. There are other methods, too, like heating and bending. “My grandma showed me this trick she used to use on her shoes years ago and I always go for it first when I get a new pair of stiff shoes,” says former Commerce Editor Olivia Dubyak. “Basically you heat your shoe up where it's tight, like with a heating pack, and then twist and bend the shoe.” This may not be an instant fix, but it helps to do it several times before wear to work it most effectively.

What Are the Best Socks to Wear with Loafers?

Wearing visible socks may have been a fashion faux pas years ago, but Gen Z has deemed the calf sock a must-have for any chic wardrobe, and I’m more than willing to hop on board if it means my feet will be that much more comfortable. I suggest choosing a slightly thicker sock or one with visible ribbing to avoid slipping at the heel. You can also style your loafers with a set of higher socks for a dark academia or Rory Gilmore style, too. “For sock and loafer pairings, the best rule of thumb is opposites attrac,” says Greer. “If you’re styling chunkier loafers with denim or a maxi, pair with a slimmer knit sock. If you’ve got a slim heeled or flat pair of loafers and you’re pairing with a mini, a chunkier sock can help balance out the look.”
