I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the skirt. And this year, fashion enthusiasts are moving beyond tried-and-true silk skirts and venturing into bold, experimental territory. Skirts are no longer just about versatility—they’re about making a statement. From textures and fabrics to unique cuts, shapes and lengths, the skirt game is evolving in exciting ways. Midi skirts continue to dominate, but I’m also seeing the return of sharp pencil skirts, fluid boho silhouettes and unexpected elements like sheer overlays and eye-catching statement sequins. Whether you're drawn to classic styles or more daring designs, here are six skirt trends for 2025 that you should know about.

1. Sheer Overlays

If you know me, then you know this comes as a shock when I say that skirts with sheer overlays are perhaps my favorite skirt trend of the past few years. Designers like Issey Miyake and Chloé continue to play around with sheer fabrics like chiffon, organza and lace in their recent collections, so I know this trend will remain strong throughout 2025. While you don’t have to go and bare it all like a ‘90s Ralph Lauren model, there are plenty of skirt options that incorporate sheer hems or trains that allow you to pull of this look while still keeping your underwear a secret. I’ve also seen women start to wear oversize Oxford button-down blouses underneath sheer skirts as a way to cover up, and—let me tell you—it looks incredibly chic.

2. Pencil Silhouettes

Another skirt comeback I’m excited for is the pencil skirt. Structured, slim-fitting and oh-so powerful, fashionable women are transforming this 9-to-5 corporate uniform into a chic everyday piece you’ll want to wear beyond your cubicle that exudes confidence. For a sharp and polished look, lean into the structured silhouette with bespoke hourglass blazers and pointy heels or boots.

3. Boho

The boho revival is here to stay in 2025, thanks to designers like Chloè and Isabel Marant, whose collections included plenty of billowy ruffles and volume like the image above. The flowy frocks have a natural movement to them, so the key isn’t to tame it but rather embrace it instead and pair it with pieces that almost highlight or draw attention to the dramatics. For instance, you can match the boho vigor with a chiffon blouse that also incorporates ruffles to emphasize the effect tenfold, or you can opt for a grungy, moody vibe with leathers or suedes to ground it while also upping the illusion of more movement.

4. The Layered Effect

This next skirt trend is all about doubling up. The layered effect, seen in collections like Balenciaga and Tory Burch, features a single skirt with multiple visible layers of fabric, creating the illusion of wearing several skirts at once. You can also easily recreate the look at home with pieces you already own by layering multiple skirts together, though there are also ready-to-wear styles available to shop at popular retailers.

5. Handkerchief Hems

Call it the boho effect or move away from the conventional, but handkerchief hems are here to stay. The resurgence of handkerchief hem skirts was seen in Oscar de la Renta’s Pre-Spring 2025 collection as well as Tanya Taylor’s Fall 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection, proving that this design is here to stay for the foreseeable future, which makes sense when you consider the rise of bohemian styles. In a way, the asymmetrical and whimsical hemlines create a movement, shape and softness that’s like the boho flair.

6. Sequins

In 2025, more is more. With maximalism making a comeback and quite luxury taking a backseat, sequins are officially back, baby! This year, I expect to see more people experimenting with versatility and wearability of this style. Statement skirts like this are a great way to add texture and color to your outfits, and they don’t have to be saved for special occasions or New Year’s Eve. For example, you can pair the sequins back with thick knits or even a basic tee if you want to make it feel more casual.
