I’ve been ruminating on the Chloé Fall/Winter 2024 show that debuted at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year for nearly seven months now, watching the effects that the iconic collection is having on fall fashion and pop culture. As soon as Daisy Edgar Jones stepped out wearing Chloé look after Chloé look fresh off the runways for the Twisters press tour, I knew it was only a matter of time before the boho revival caught on elsewhere. Emily in Paris couldn’t help herself either from experiencing a boho-chic winter in the second half of season four, as she stepped out wearing the Isabel Marant Florene coat and Brodeback lug over-the-knee boots by Louboutin that my brain is still reeling over. So, if Emily’s sherpa and caramel-colored leather choices or Chemena Kamali’s chiffon and suede designs weren’t enough tell you, boho-chic is primed to become the biggest fall fashion trend I expect to see everywhere.

What Is Boho-Chic?

The boho-chic aesthetic we’re witnessing today is modern and elevated. Even New York Fashion Week ran rampant with bohemian inspiration. Just the other day I came across Cynthia Rowley’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection and noticed ruffled trims, fringe finishes and embroidered denim. (Pieces Serena van der Woodsen would have hanging in her closet the next day, no doubt.) And don’t get me started on the use of fringe and leather at the Nanushka showing.

As someone who’s always felt a kinship with ‘70s fashion and sought inspiration from the original Charlie’s Angels, particularly Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith, as well as American treasures like Jane Fonda and Pam Grier, nothing makes me happier than seeing the return of over-the-knee leather boots, statement belts, fringe accessories, suede jackets, ruffled garments and earth tones. Unlike the questionable fashion choices of our past (I’m looking at you, floppy felt hats and flower crowns), 2024’s boho-chic trend is all about elevated editing. Here’s how to master the boho-chic trend this fall without looking like you stepped out of 2012.

1. Opt for Ruffled Silhouettes with Movement

Ruffles may quite possibly be one of the most obvious markers of the boho-chic trend, but it’s easy to get it wrong if you don’t know how to style the ornate trim. If you can find flowy frocks with a lot of movement and drama (I’m talking billowy sleeves and high-low hems), then you’re on the right track. Those will look great when paired with knee-high boots. If that’s a little too much for you, you can dip your toe into the ruffle pool with embellished chiffon blouses, too.

2. Try Suede Jackets and Fringe Finishes

Unless you’ve been on a holiday hiatus for the past two months, suede seems to be the number one most-coveted fall fabric on everyone’s mind. While you can expect to see a slew of brown suede boots and bags in every retailer and department store, suede jackets with fringe finishes will particularly be especially sought after.

3. Accessorize with Cuff Bracelets

Cuff bracelets are back and better than ever, folks. This time around, I’m not seeing an overwhelming use of noisy bangles or stacks so crowded they could pass as armor. Instead, I’m seeing people incorporate one or two statement cuff bracelets with their ensembles. My absolute favorite way I’ve seen fashionistas style it is over long-sleeve blouses, like you see pictured above. From acetate to metal finishes, the popular cuff bracelets are taking the “less is more” approach, making way for that modern and elevated boho-chic quality I was talking about.

4. Wear Earthy Tones

Pay attention to your color palette when mastering the boho-chic trend. You’ll want to stick to earthy tones when putting outfits together. Think: sky blue, browns, greens, black and off-white. Don’t be afraid to incorporate a splash of molten lava red or burgundy in there, as these rich colors are often used as a nice pop of color amongst the darker hues.

5. Stun in Over-the-Knee Boots

Discussing the latest and greatest fall shoe trends just so happens to be one of my favorite pastimes. What’s more, it turns out that the boho-chic aesthetic predominantly features one of my favorite fall styles: over-the-knee boots. Apart from the wooden wedges that were on the feet of almost every guest in attendance, Chloé’s runway was saturated with sky-high leather and suede boots. As I previously mentioned, high-low hems, mini dresses and miniskirts make the perfect pairing, showcasing a peep of skin that looks oh-so fashionable.

boho-chic-fall-trend Expect to See Shearling-Lined Outerwear and Cape Coats
Edward Berthelot / Contributor

6. Expect to See Shearling-Lined Outerwear and Cape Coats

Shearling-lined jackets are a timeless staple from the ‘70s. Plush to the core (literally) and durable in design, these jackets have remained classics in bohemian fashion. This fall, however, I’m seeing a modern twist. While bomber jackets will always be in style, cape coats are taking the spotlight this autumn. The sophisticated design of the cape puts the chic in boho-chic—bonus points if you can find one with a shearling-lined inner, but if not, stick to those earthy tones I mentioned above.

7. Sport Colorful Aviator Sunglasses

Another key accessory particularly popular in the decade of hippie, punk and disco was aviator sunglasses. From Gloria Steinem to Freddie Mercury to Elvis, prominent personalities and public figures adopted the style from pilots, and fall 2024 is no different, except you should prepare to see transparent lenses in a slew of (yes, earthy) colors, including red, yellow and green, and thicker frames in place of the thin wire styles of yesteryear.

boho-chic-fall-trend Do Denim on Denim
Edward Berthelot / Contributor

8. Do: Denim on Denim

Also known as the Canadian tuxedo, denim on denim ensembles and co-ord sets are already one of the most popular pairings right now, so just wait until we make it to peak fall. I expect nothing less from the age of Wrangler and Levi’s. For a quintessential bohemian look, consider a jumpsuit, but if you prefer separates, I suggest you opt for dark denim instead of lighter washes for a more elevated look and refined ensemble.

9. Swap Out Your Baguette Bag for a Slouchy Hobo Bag

Don't retire your Carrie Bradshaw-inspired baguette bags just yet—they're always in style. However, for fall 2024, the relaxed hobo bag is the must-have accessory. “Opt for as little detailing as possible—plain black or brown will likely be your best bets—and be sure not to fill it up all the way so that the material has room to slouch,” says PureWow’s Fashion Editor, Abby Hepworth. Consider Coach’s Brooklyn shoulder bag, a favorite of Bella Hadid, which combines a structured yet relaxed look with leather and suede finishes that’ll age like fine wine.

boho-chic-fall-trend Lean Into Leather
Edward Berthelot / Contributor

10. Lean Into Leather

Another boho-chic fabric that’s non-negotiable for fall is leather. Durable and insulated, leather has always been a staple for autumn, and this year is no exception. Leather jackets, pants, skirts and boots will be in abundance, especially those in burgundy and army green hues, as well as animal prints. And if I learned anything from the Nanushka presentation, it’s clear that pairing leather with fringe pieces creates an effortlessly stylish bohemian look.

boho-chic-fall-trend Don’t Forget Statement Belts and Bold Animal Prints

11. Don’t Forget Statement Belts and Bold Animal Prints

Unlike the quiet luxury trend, the boho-chic revival embraces a plethora of accessories and bold motifs, often paired with delicate fabrics like chiffon and finishes such as ruffles. To master this trend, add a statement belt over your blouse, dress, or jeans, and I suggest opting for retro metal chain belts, oversized buckles or wide fabric designs. Then, make sure to position the belt at your waist or low on your hips for the best effect. Save psychedelic and floral prints for Halloween costumes and instead channel your inner Cher with leopard prints for a sophisticated look that makes a striking statement.
