I know we’re still battling the elements in our funnel-neck coats and scarf jackets, but there’s nothing that excites me more than the idea of a spring sweater. Last year was all about the fluffy French sweater trend, but in 2025, I’m turning my attention to this year’s must-have knit to round out my transitional winter-to-spring pieces: the asymmetrical cardigan.

As you can see from content creator Charissa’s TikTok video above, adding an asymmetrical cardigan to your staple basics is a simple and easy way to instantly elevate your look and add a fashionable touch. She recommends starting with your knitwear first, then building your look around it, keeping the focus and attention on the distinctive design while still having fun with accessories to make it your own.

I first spotted the asymmetrical cardigan trend on content creator @itsyourgirlsamanthaaa a few months back, and I’ve had my eyes peeled ever since to see if the look would stick. Then, I spotted two cardigans styled ever so slightly open during last week’s Tory Burch FW 2025 collection at NYFW. It all just proved to me that the unconventional knitwear is a trend to watch.

I’ve included a few styles to shop right now—don’t be surprised if you start to see more asymmetrical styles pop up in the coming months when the spring trend really takes off.

Swap out your usual gray cardigan for this long-sleeve staple from Topshop. It’s made to be fitted on the bodice, so if you prefer extra space, I suggest sizing up one. I really like how it buttons, leaving about an inch of extra fabric at the neckline and hem.

If you prefer the look of a classic crewneck but are interested in trying out the spring trend, consider this asymmetrical cardigan. It has all the classic features that make up a quality knit, and boasts such a delicate aesthetic, thanks to its rolled hemlines and pearlescent buttons. And just wait until you see the other colors it’s available in, too.

If you want to baby step your way into the asymmetrical look, try this & Other Stories cardigan. It still has that off kilter design, but in more of a wrap style with one button closure to cinch everything together to give you that hourglass silhouette. What’s really nice about this style is that you also get to enjoy a V-neckline, rather than a traditional crewneck that most cardigans usually have.

I’m always on the lookout for versatile pieces to add to my wardrobe, and this sweater hits the mark. Thanks to its unique design, you can style it as a cowl neck, wear it open or really get creative with it and play around with the buttoning. Oh, and did I mention that it’s made from 100 percent cashmere? One buyer says, “The asymmetrical cut on this sweater is fantastic, and the cashmere is really lovely.” She does recommend sizing up if you want to layer it and especially if you have big boobs.

Here’s another single-buttoned cardigan I adore. From the bright pop of red to its under-$50 price point, there’s a lot to love when it comes to this knit. Best of all, you can easily wear your favorite necklace stack with it, too.

Quite possibly my favorite of the bunch because of its buttery yellow shade is this Bohème knit. It’s made from a blend of cool linen and breathable cotton, making it an ideal transitional piece to wear between seasons and well into the summer, too. My only qualm is that it’s on the pricier side, but with a sweeping neckline like that, you’re really investing in a work of art.
